Belt bowlers dominant at city tourney

I've always said give any bowler from Belt a halfway decent condition, and they certainly will know how to take advantage.

It was no different this past weekend as Belt bowlers dominated the C Division of the ABC City Championships, which wrapped up two weeks of action Sunday at Murph's Party Bowl and Black Eagle Lanes.

Red's Sand and Gravel, with Neill Sweeney, Bret Vaskey, Gary Pimperton — who may be better known for his saddle bronc riding ability — Pat Urick and Dave Anderson, captured the C Division championship as Belt teams posted first, third and fifth-place finishes.

Anderson and Vaskey went on to win their second straight doubles title, leading a first, third and fifth-place effort by Belt bowlers.

Wayne Francom added yet another city title to his vast collection, rolling a 608 scratch and 734 with handicap to win the B Division singles. Charlie Lindeman and Vaskey, again, were second and fourth in the C Division singles, respectively.

"Basically, give us anything that is reasonably flat," said Sweeney, who was a member of a second straight team title. "And we can make it work."

"Our conditions our so difficult in Belt," said Vaskey. "It is hard to maintain a high average."

Other winners included Wayne Quinby, who won the A Division singles with a 764, and Wade Thompson, who was the C Division winner with a 796, highlighted by a 634 scratch effort.

Jack Hawley rolled a huge 728 set and combined with Jeff Dennen to win the A Division doubles with a 1,482. Jerry Brown and Dale Grabofsky, two standouts off the Thompson Automotive Service team, took the B Division doubles with a 1,435.

The GFBA team, made up of captain Don Jordan, Dick Gipe, Mike Bowles, Charlie Pepos and Jim Rothweiler, held on to win the A Division team title with a 3,559. Keith Kercher's 619 series paced 10-60, with Sergio Carrion, Ken Prigmore, Garn Wanner and Dave Cashman, to the B Division championship.

Bob Orham's 706 captured the Scratch Singles title.

Here are the top three place finishers in each event and full results can be found at www.gfba.mtsba.com.

All-Events winners will be announced later this week.

Most weeks a 779 series would certainly win high-scoring honors, but not this week.

Paul Dehn's ringin' — and I mean ringin' — 7-pin in the 10th frame of his final game robbed the lefthander of a second 800 series this season.

Dehn bowling in the MixMasters at Little's reeled off games of 257, 290 and 248 for a 795 set edging out Shannon Ostlie, who tossed a 779, on games of 268, 256 and 255, in the Elks' Friday Nite Mixed League.

Last October, Dehn rolled his first 800 of his career with an 823.

In more tournament news, Lewistown's Jesse Burleigh leads the singles and Bonehead Brigade, with Casey Philp, Brian Ophus, Earl Tresch, Leno Lankutis and Tim Anthony, currently lead the team standings after the first weekend of the Budweiser Handicap Tournament at Snowy Lanes in Lewistown..

Burleigh shot a six-game total of 1,423 with handicap to lead Billings' Yvette Pelzel, who had a 1,359.

Bonehead Brigade's 3,356 leads Mix & Match, who had a 3,335.

Three more weekends remain in the tournament, and shifts are filling up fast. Phone Rex Coleman at 538-3473 for more information.

The Slicks, with a 3,369, currently lead the Elks Snowball No-Tap Mixed Tournament with one weekend to go. Elks' manager Rod Hackett wants to remind bowlers of the upcoming Elks City Tournament, which will run Feb. 5-6 and 12-13, and also for the Marty Vigen Memorial Classic.

Finally, the Fort Benton women held their city tournament with the following results:

Team — 1. Shrewd Ladies, 3,295. 2. Overland Bar, 3,081

Doubles — 1. Star Taylor-Cindy Hunter, 1,287. 2. Sherry Starman-Charleen Elliott, 1,262

Singles — 1. Jill Kerbs, 705. 2. Naldine Nash, 670. 3. Brenda Price, 666.

All Events — Scratch — Susie Yager, 1,462. Handicap — Naldine Nash, 1,908.
