Tourneys on tap at Little's

Two of the most popular tournaments of the season return this weekend as Little's Lanes plays host to the annual Santy Agency and Bud Light 40 & Over Scratch Classic and 40/90 Doubles Classic.

The last few years of the tourney have been dominated by Bruce Steffani and partner Ken Larson.

Steffani will be back to defend his singles title from a year ago, and he and Larson will be looking for a 3-peat in Sunday's doubles.

Steffani, who has been bothered with back problems the past few seasons, won last last year's singles with back-to-back wins over Jim Kernaghan in the finals.

In the doubles, Steffani and Larson defeated Ken Curry and Bob Orham, 234-193, in the championship match.

As usual, both tournaments have drawn quality fields and Steffani will have to withstand stern tests from the likes of Kalispell's Cory Wagner, Calgary's Jack Guay and Butte's Mark Hodges.

In the doubles, Al Pearsall and Willie McGee have always been perennially tough in the event, along with Wagner and Columbia Falls' Ron Vandevanter as well as Guay and Walter Fritz. Curry and Orham have also renewed their partnership and could be formidable again.

Saturday's qualifying shifts for the singles are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and plenty of spots are available. The match-play portion will be held immediately following the second shift.

On Sunday, the doubles begin at 8:15 a.m. As of Monday afternoon, only three spots were available.

Last year, a winter storm played havoc with the doubles and the tournament was reduced to 23 teams.

Entry fee for the singles is $70 and $140 per team for the doubles. Phone Little's at 452-4116 for more information on either tournament.

First place in the singles is $500. The doubles winners will take home $1,000.

  • Plans have been finalized for the first Classic 50's Ladies Scratch Classic, which has been set for Little's Lanes on Jan. 15-16.

Over $1,500 money has been added to the tournament, which is expected to draw some of the top women's competiton from across the state as well as Canada.

Qualifying shifts for Saturday (Jan. 15) are at 1 and 4 p.m. with the top 20-24 bowlers advancing to Sunday's match play.

The match-play portion will feature two squads bowling seven games with the field cut to the top five for a stepladder final.

On Saturday, following qualifying, a calcutta will be held at Classic 50s Casino.

Phone Little's at 452-4116 for more information or to enter the tournament.

Tourney organizers are hoping for a field of 40 bowlers the first year.

Tidbits: Black Eagle Lanes will play host to yet another four-game handicap singles qualifier on Tuesday, Jan. 11, starting at 8 p.m. Handicap will be 80 percent of 220 and the top four qualifiers advance to a stepladder roll-off. ... Don't forget to get your entries in for the upcoming Great Falls Bowling Association City Tournament, which be held Jan. 15-16, 22-23 at Black Eagles Lanes and Murph's Party Bowl. Entry forms are available at all association houses. ... Also, Jan 22-23 is the opening weekend for the popular Budweiser Handicap Tournament at Lewistown's Snowy Lanes. The tourney runs four weekends through Feb. 12-13. Phone tourney manager Rex Coleman at 538-3473 for more information.

Week in, week out, Bob Orham consistently turns in good scores. Last week, Orham went a little higher rolling a nifty 745 set, which included games of 257, 251 and 237, for the high series of the week. Orham was bowling in the 535 Scratch League at Pin & Cue.

For the women, Kristen Egan continues to produce high scores and put up a 681, with games of 223 and 256, in last week's MixMasters at Little's to lead the week. Egan beat out veteran Pam Brendgord, who had a nice 677, sporting games of 236 and 258, in Little's Casino League. Crystal Kinman, who had a career-high 279 game, also deserves mention.

Orham beat out some other top scores including Dustin Curtis, who turned in a nice 738 in the Jack & Jill League at the Elks, with games of 255, 246 and 237. Up north, Mark Aspevig reeled off a season-high at the K-lines in Rudyard with a 722 series, featuring games of 248 and 257.

Other top women's scores included Sharon Kunz's 676 set in the Jack & Jill League at the Elks. Kunz's set had games of 246 and a pair of 215. For the women at Pin & Cue, steady Nobi Sirucek was high with a 225 game, which led to a 582 series.

At Murph's, Mike Kummer's 245 game and Shawna Lane's 217 set the pace.

Bob Chesko rolled a 604 series, with a 224 high game, and Stretch Richards' 592, on games of 206 and 200, were the men's and women's best at Black Eagle Lanes.
