Prepsters fare well vs. Hawaii |
| The results were
not important, but the occasion was historic
as the first Montana high school bowling
teams took on out-of-state competition two
weekends ago in Hawaii.
Teams from Helena High and Helena Capital traveled to Honolulu for matches against Forst Shafter Sacred Hearts Academy, Maryknoll and Punahou Bluff high schools. "I think our schools fared well against the Hawaii teams for not being as well established," said Michelle Anderson-Scherer, manager of Helena's Sleeping Giant Lanes. "Their teams have been involved in high school bowling for many years. Ours have only been established since last February." For the record, the Helena schools dropped all four of their matches. The format was three games of regular bowling with three games in the Baker format. "It was the first of its kind for Montana and hopefully the first of many," said Anderson, who helped chaperone the trip along with Doug Prewett and Florence Liston. Representing the Helena High girls were Kendra Boyd, Stevie Cunningham and Kendra Cornell. The boys' team was made up of Zack Lukenbill, Mark Harschfeld and Sean Hill. The Helena Capital teams were Kaitlyn Eslick, Rachel Ellmaker and Terri Johnson. C.J. Martin, Brady Ferriter and Lucas Fradette made up the boys' team. Hill threw the top series for the boys with a 598, with a 224 game. Eslick turned in a nice 546 set and Cornell counted a 532 with a 202 game. The bowlers raised close to $7,600 for the trip and stayed with host families in Hawaii, where they learned a little culture about the islands.
The tourney, which will have a team and single format, will be held at Elks and Little's Lanes. Tourney organizer Tom Brendgord reminds area youths that the deadline, Nov. 8, is quickly approaching and teams and individuals need to get their entries in. Contact Brendgord at 453-2599 for more information or to obtain an entry form.
The Boys, out of Great Falls, hold the men's lead with a 2,600, followed by Have Balls Will Travel, out of Cheyenne, Wyo., who have a 2,577. Leading the women's team event is Just For Fun, who have a 2,707. Friends of Great Falls is second with a 2,592. In the doubles, Jerry Osborn and Shannon Ostlie, both from Great Falls, lead the men with with a 1,379. The formidable duo of Rod Hackett and Duane Zeier is in second with a 1,362. Great Falls' Theresa Schreder and Connie Bartell lead the women's doubles with a 1,382. Deer Lodge's Arlita Fenner and Marie Davy are second with a 1,358. Cheyenne's Louis Vichs holds down the singles' lead with after a 732, which included a 299 game. Vichs went high in the 12th frame and left a stubborn 4-pin, just missing a perfect game. Great Falls' Lisa Dunn has the women's singles lead with a 2,l83, followed by Fenner, who totaled 2,007. The tourney wraps up this weekend. Phone the Elks, 454-1305, for more information.
Sunday's venue for the finals was Miller Park, which is the home of the baseball Milwaukee Brewers. If you didn't catch the action on ESPN, it was something to see. Four lanes were set up on the rightfield, pointing toward centerfield of the stadium, which has retractable roof. Between five and six thousand fans watched the action from the bleachers. Danny Wiseman won the event.
Egan wasn't quiet last Wednesday night reeling off games of 237, 233 and 256 for a huge 726 set in the MixMasters at Little's. The series was the high for the women this season. On the same night, Jim Dixon just missed tossing a 300 game, leaving a ringin' 10 for a 299 game, also in the MixMasters. Mel Willey showed how it is done on Thursday tossing a 742 series, with games of 266 and 279, in the 725 Classified. At Pin & Cue, Karen Arps led the women with a 610 set, highlighted by games of 222 and 209. Chuck Lull's 700 in the 535 Scratch League was high for the men. Lull's set included games of 237, 227, 236 and 255, and he ended the night with a stellar 955 four-game total. Over at the Elks, Rod Hackett came up a pin short of 700 in the Tuesday men with a 699 set, with games of 235, 232 and 232. Lauretta Gifford's topped the women with games of 236 and 231 in a pair of leagues. Bob Smith turned in a nice set at Black Eagle with a 629, which was 101 total pins over his average. Smith's series was highlighted by a 235 game. Gloria Franz, in the Thursday Mixed, earned women's honors with a 560 set, with games of 208 and 201. Stretch Richard's 246 game was the high single.
