New resident putting up big numbers |
|
Since Hans Schell has moved to Great Falls from Billings he has been making big waves on the local bowling scene. In September, Schell just missed a perfect game at Pin & Cue, throwing an 8-count in the 12th for a 298 game. During the month of October, Schell continuely battered the high 600 the 700 marks at both Pin & Cue and Little’s. Last Thursday, Schell exploded for the magical 800 series, bowling in the 725 Classified League at Little’s. Schell reeled off games of 275, 267 and 258 for an 800 right on the nose. "He needed a strike, 9-spare in the last frame of the final game to get it," said teammate Fred Sadler. "He got the strike and then left a 4-pin and converted." The 800 was a career first for Schell, who works out on Malmstrom in the communications squadron. The 800 was also the second of the season and second in the 725 league. Paul Dehn rolled the first, an 823, last month.
Although the turnout may be somewhat disappointing, the second Montana High School Bowling Team and Individual Championships will go on as planned this weekend at Little’s and Elks. Organizer Tom Brendgord said Monday he has drawn enough boys’ and girls’ teams and singles entries to go on with the tournament, and will accept entries up until Saturday’s last shift, which is at 7:45 p.m. "We knew this tourney would take a while to take hold, and we believe it is catching on," said Brendgord, who is the executive director of the Montana Bowling Proprietors Association. The association is using the tourney, and the one held last May, as a gauge to see if it wants to present a proposal to start varsity bowling to the Montana High School Athletic Association in the future. "We have made great strides in the past year with the first-ever matches between the schools from different cities. This tournament had a successful debut in May and the Helena schools just came back from Hawaii after bowling matches against schools over there. "We thought by moving this tourney into the prime bowling season, we could draw a few more entries." Brendgord said that some of the top junior bowlers from around the state are planning on attending this weekend’s event. "We even have a bowler from Glendive coming in just to bowl singles," said Brendgord. Shift times Saturday are 12:30, 2:45, 5:30 and 7:45 p.m. on Saturday. Singles’ shifts, which will be at the Elks, are 9 and 10:30 a.m., 12:30 and 2:15 p.m. Late entries may contact Brendgord at 453-2599 or can get in touch at Little’s, 452-4116, or the Elks, 454-1305.
The final, but unofficial, results of the Elks’ Great Hurrah Tournament are in. In the men’s team event, the Deer Lodge Fabs, which included Ken Fenner, Charles Sedmini, Randy Ring and Randy Brown, aced out The Boys, made up of Bernie K. Dickman, Steve Vernon, Jerry Osborn and Duane Zeier, for the top spot. The Fabs fired a 2,632 to The Boys’ 2,600. Great Falls’ Just For Fun, with Dawn Vernon, Maureen Downey, Jean Ostlie and Lisa Dunn, held on to the top spot with a 2,707, beating Friends, with Tina Bulls, Lois Hering, Helen Dial and Kay Kinzinger, who had a 2,592. In the singles, Cascade’s Bob Standley won the men’s with a 767. Great Falls’ Lisa Dunn was the women’s winner with a 724. Doubles champions were Jerry Osborn and Shannon Ostlie in the men’s division with a 1,379. Theresa Schreder and Connie Bartell were the women’s winners with a 1,382. Dawn Vernon and Duane Zeier were crowned the mixed doubles champions with a 1,381, beating out Mearl and Shirley Christianson, who had a 1,302. The Happy Bowlers, with Steve and Dawn Vernon, Lisa Dunn and Bernie K. Dickman, were the mixed team winners with a 2,694. Cheyenne’s Ace Deuel, with a 2,062, and Dunn, 2,183, were the all-events champs.
NOTES: Rod Hackett wants to remind women bowlers about the upcoming second annual Elks Ladies Classic, which will be held Nov. 20-21. Missoula’s Tina Hanninen is the defending champion. … Butte’s Mark Hodges returned to the Montana bowling scene, winning the latest stop of the Budweiser Traveling League at Bozeman’s Country Lanes. The veteran lefthander defeated Marc Mosness, 226-176, in the championship match. Ed Robbins was third. Bobby Lawton was fourth and Jim McKenzie took fifth. The next stop for the league will be Sunday at Helena’s Sleeping Giant Lanes. … Black Eagle Lanes will play host to a four-game qualifier on Tuesday, Nov. 16. Entrants will bowl four games across eight lanes, using 80 percent of a 220 for a handicap. The top four advance to a stepladder final. The field will be limited to 24 bowlers with an entry fee of $20.
Schell’s 800 stole the show last week, but there still a number of top-flight scores that deserve mention. Senior bowler Lloyd Allee turned in a nice effort in the Black Eagle Seniors. Allee had games of 207 and 191 on his way to a 568 set, which was 157 total pins over his average. Maggie Deaton led the women at Black Eagle with a huge 227 game and 540 series in the Tuesday 55 Club. At the Elks, Talbert Bryan was right on the 700 nose with games of 256 and 234 in the Tuesday Men. Karin Osborn’s 631 in the Thursday Ladies was high for the women. Linda Michel tossed a nice 639 three-game set and an 820 four-game series, with games of 247 and 223, to lead the women at Pin & Cue. Don White’s 699, with games of 268 and 228, in the Saturday Mixers was the high for the men. High games topped the action at Murph’s with a 267 by Tony Milovich and a 207 by Shawna Lane. More from Little’s included a 742 by Paul Dehn, who also threw a 204 triplicate in the Friday Straight-A-Way League. Doris Kimmerle’s 246-662 and Judy Jackson’s 247-648 were the women’s highs downtown.
