Added bucks add spice to Wild Turkey tournament

What proved to be one of the most popular in-league tournaments in some time comes back for its second year.

The MBPA Wild Turkey Doubles returns to Little's, this time with an added wrinkle — a national tournament that offers a prize fund of $50,000.

The format for the in-league qualifying remains the same with doubles teams — either two men, two women or mixed — bowling three games each. Bowlers can pair with anyone bowling in a league at the same time, which makes the format unique.

A team must roll, with handicap, 1,200 or more to qualify for the house finals and a bowler can qualify as many times for the house finals as shifts are available. It costs $3 per person to qualify.

One in three doubles teams will qualify for the state finals from the house finals.

At both the house and state finals, a combination of Baker and regular doubles scoring will be used.

Last season, Bill and Brian Brown combined to shoot an 1,866 over six games to win the first-ever state title.

The duo collected first prize of $1,326, winning the title over Bozeman's Vern Parrow and Dean Fowler, who totaled 1,839 to pocket the $810 second prize.

This season, house finalists can either bowl state at Country Lanes in Bozeman on March 5-6, or at Little's in Great Falls on March 12-13, giving house winners both a convenient time and location.

A qualifying team can bowl either location, but not at both.

The state winners at both locations receive all-expense paid trips, which includes airfare, lodging and entry fee, to the National Finals in Las Vegas, which will be held on Aug. 9 at Sam's Town.

First place is $10,000.

Watch for in-league qualifying to begin soon.

A couple of major tournaments are quickly approaching.

The Santy Agency-Coors Light 40-90 Doubles and Singles will be held Jan. 8-9 at Little's.

Last year, a winter storm blew through the area crippling the entries for the tourney, which usually draws a full field for Sunday's doubles.

Also, starting Jan. 15-16 the ABC City Championships will open two weekends of action at Black Eagle and Murph's.

The team event will be held at Black Eagle, with doubles and singles set for Murph's Party Bowl and Night Club.

Entry fee for the team event is $90 per team, and $36 for doubles and singles.

Entry forms for both tournaments are available at all local kegling establishments.

The Elks Snowball Tournament, which proved to be a popular attraction last year, has been moved to the four weekends in January, according to lanes manager Rod Hackett.

"It was changed because there were too many company parties taking up the weekends in December," said Hackett.

Fortunately, the snowballs may stick together better in January.

Anita Christensen wants to remind bowlers of another four-game qualifier to be held at Black Eagle on Tuesday, Dec. 14.

Call Black Eagle 453-4736 for more information about the qualifier.

Good news this week, all lanes reported and we have a full roundup of scores, including two weeks worth from the Elks.

Speaking of the Elks, Bernie K. Dickman continues his close calls with the magical 800 mark. Two weeks ago in the Wednesday Bull Elks, Dickman strung together games of 287, 247 and 236 for a huge 770 effort.

This week, Les Bruner led the scores with a nifty 750 set in the 535 Scratch League at Pin & Cue. Bruner had games of 243-259 and 258 and capped off the night with a 215 game for 975 four-game set.

Leading the ladies on the westside was the emerging Chris Dittus, who fired a 638 set, with games of 222 and 237.

Bowling at the Elks, Al Ridder tossed a big 746 series, spiced with a huge 290 game. Sharon Kunz's 607 with a 247 high game was high for the women.

Mike Judd put together games of 247, 247 and 235 for a 706 set, leading the men at Little's. Barb Lankford's 656, with games of 211, 235 and 210, was high set shot by a woman last week.

Al Debartoli, bowling the Friday Alibi, shot a 665, marked by 241 and 224 games for the high set at Murph's. Sharon Gribble's 222 game in the SkyRaiders earned women's honors.

Bob Chesko's 666, with games fo 249 and 234, and Stretch Richard's 597, on games of 202 and 201, were the highs at Black Eagle. Mary Anderson's 589, with 215 and 200 games, also deserves mention.
