Juniors to take spotlight

A lot of odds and ends have been floating around the desk this week, and it's time to clean out the old kegling mailbox.

Most pressing is the start of the Great Falls Junior Bowling Association City Tournament, which begins two weekends of action this Saturday at Murph's Party Bowl.

The tourney is split into four divisions for teams, five for doubles and five each for the boys and girls in the singles.

Shift times are noon and 3 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Entry forms can be picked up at all city houses are downloaded from the GFBA website http://gfba.mtsba.com.

For more information contact Mike Bowles at 268-1960 or e-mail him at gfba@bresnan.net.

  • Next Sunday, Feb. 13, Little's will play host to Over and Under 50 Doubles.

Shift times are at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. for the handicap event, in which one bowler must be 50 or over and one under 50.

Handicap is 80 percent of 225.

Entry fee per team is $55.

  • Entry forms are currently available for the 61st annual Great Falls Women's Bowling Association City Tournament, which will be held at Pin & Cue, Feb. 19-20, 26-27.

An added wrinkle to this year's tourney is the inclusion of a non-smoking shift, which will be the first squad on each day of each weekend.

    The four-person team event will have squad times of 4 p.m. on Feb. 19, 2 p.m. on Feb. 20, 1 and 7 p.m. on Feb. 26 and 11 a.m. on Feb. 27.

    Doubles and singles may be bowled at 1 and 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 19, 11 a.m. on Feb. 20, 4 p.m. on Feb. 26 and 2 p.m. on Feb. 27.

Entry fee for each event is $16 per person.

  • Lewistown's Bonehead Brigade, with Casey Philp, Brian Ophus, Earl Tresch, Leno Lankutis and Tim Anthony, held on to the team lead after two weekends of the Budweiser Handicap Tournament at Snowy Lanes in Lewistown.

The fivesome fired a first-week 3,356 and held off the challenge of Harlem's Kulbeck Auto, who is currently in second with a 3,337.

Harlem's Davis Longknife took over the singles' lead with a 1,435, edging first-week leader Jesse Burleigh of Lewistown, who had a 1,423.

Only the afternoon shifts have openings the final two weekends. Phone Rex Coleman at 538-3473 for more information.

The Slicks, with Dawn Vernon, Connie Bartell, Steve Vernon and Bernie K. Dickman, captured the second Snowball Mixed No-Tap Tournament at the Elks. The foursome fired a 3,369, almost 100 pins better than the second-place team, The DVs, made up of the Vernons and Chris and Lisa Dunn.

Elks' manager Rod Hackett reminds bowlers that the Elks City Tournament is filling up fast and entry forms are available for the first Marty Vigen Memorial Tournament.

GFBA secretary Belinda Sadler has released the all-events winners for this year's ABC City Championships.

In the A Division, Wayne Quinby was the handicap winner with Terry Pearsall taking the scratch.

Wayne Francom swept both the scratch and handicap in the B division.

Bret Vaskey won the scratch all-events in the C Division with Charlie Lindeman winning the handicap.

Sadler said checks from the tournament will be distributed next week.

Speaking of Francom, the Belt bowler is currently forming a high-school team from the community.

"We have been practicing at Pro Alley Bowl when we can get together," said Francom, "But we are in need of better bowling balls."

Francom asked if anyone is interested in donating a bowling ball to the program, he could certainly use them. He can be contacted at 277-3637.

"We have both a boys' and girls' team and we will be looking to bowl some matches in the spring," he said.

Bob Orham and Dave Pfeifle are currently taking applications for the Great Falls Youth Association Hall of Fame.

Application forms are available at all lanes.

New members to the hall, as well as the GFBA and GFWBA halls, will be inducted in ceremonies May 14 at Black Eagle.

Paul Dehn continued his hot hand last week, leading the week with a 766 set in the 725 Classified at Little's. Dehn's games included a 279, 239 and a 248. Dehn's effort overshadowed Jim Aklestad's fine 755 series rolled in the MixMasters.

Karin Osborn tossed a 673 set, also in the MixMasters, spiced with games of 257 and 236, and turned around and threw a 647 in the Friday Nite Mixed at the Elks to lead a pair of houses for the women.

Bernie K. Dickman's 711, on games of 259 and 229, was high for the men downtown.

Over at Pin & Cue, Rock Rayl's 664, with a 245 high game, and Nobi Sirucek's 639 were the men's and women's highs.

Ryan Moody, bowling in the Tuesday Tornadoes, topped the men at Murph's with a 697, coming on games of 255, 220 and 222. Karolee Pearson's 231 game in the SkyRaiders took women's honors.

After a week's absence, Black Eagle Lanes returns to the fold. John Mission topped the men with a 643 set, featuring a 233 game. Larry Eide also deserves mention with a 256 game and a 603 series, which was 138 total pins over his average. Stretch Richards, in the Black Eagle Seniors, earned women's honors with a nice 652 series, with games of 226, 214 and 212.

Shawn Horenberger led the scores at Malmstrom's Aces High, rolling a 708, highlighted by games of 248 and 258.

Curt Backa, who would like dispel the rumor that President Bush is coming to Great Falls to sub in the 725 Classified at Little's, is a Tribune sports and news copy editor and sometime columnist. Backa, when not dodging Secret Service agents, can be reached at 791-6569, (800) 438-6600 or e-mailed at cbacka@greatfal.gannett.com
