Tourney to honor Marty Vigen |
|
Elks Lanes will honor the late, great
Marty Vigen with the first memorial classic in his name, Feb.
19-20. In a unique format, bowlers will roll 12 games in two six-game blocks, which can be bowled over a two-day period. "We've had a lot of interest so far," said Elks manager Rod Hackett. "A lot of bowlers are coming out in respect for Marty." Vigen was one of the most popular bowlers to grace Great Falls and may be best known for his teaching. Many an upcoming star went to Marty when they needed a little help. And as always, Marty was always ready to help. Vigen will also be remembered for his courageous fight against cancer, which he lost in the fall of 2003. "The tournament is dedicated to a great bowler and a better Elk," said Hackett. Shift times on Saturday (19th) are at 10 a.m., 1, 4 and 7. On Sunday, the times are 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. Entry fee for the scratch tourney is $75. For more information phone the Elks at 454-1305.
Brian and Bill Brown, who are the defending state champions of the tournament, fired a 1,418 to capture the $120 first prize and a spot in next month's state tournament. Kyle Grossman and Brad Harthun finished second with a 1,346 to collect $96.50. The tourney qualified 1 for every 3 entrants for the state tournament and 11 qualifiers have their choice of state tournaments to compete. On March 5-6, Bozeman's Country Lanes will play host to one tourney or qualifiers may choose to bowl at Little's on March 12-13. Qualifiers may only bowl at one site. Both the Bozeman and Great Falls winners qualify for the national finals — which offers a $50,000 first prize — and will be held at Sam's Town in Las Vegas. Other state qualifiers and cashiers included Sean Howard and Mike Brown, 1,333, $75, who finished third. In fourth were Bill Brown and Mike Brown, with a 1,324, good for $55. Ross Bartel and Garn Warner took fifth with a 1,317, good for $40. Rounding out the top 11 were Judy Jackson and Roger Deitz (1,308); Vicky Carroll and Jackie Hassel (1,301); Karin and Jerry Osborn (1,292); Deb King and Janet Huston (1,289); Steve Johnson and Dick Cunningham (1,207) and Scott Shanahan and Chad Waltz (1,286).
Elnor Connolly, a longtime youth bowling coach and a member of both the Montana State Youth Association and Great Falls Junior Bowling Association Halls of Fame, passed away last Friday.
Lewistown's Go Cats, with Mike Otten, Kathy Parry, Pete Moe, Anne and Ted Knerr, fired a 3,383 last weekend to take over the top spot. Harlem's Davis Longknife still leads the singles with a 1,435. All scheduled shifts for the final weekend are full but tourney director Rex Coleman has added a special shift for Saturday night at 7. Phone Coleman at 538-3473 to secure a spot in the special shift. Coleman would like to remind bowlers that the lanes will not be oiled before that shift. Black Eagle Lanes will play host to another 4-game qualifier tonight, starting at 8 p.m. Bowlers will roll four games across eight lanes with the top five qualifying for a television-style stepladder final. Handicap is 80 percent of 220. Lanes' manager Anita Christianson also announced that four-game qualifiers will be held March 15, April 12 and May 18. Also, Black Eagle will hold a Monte Carlo night this Saturday starting at 7 p.m. Bowlers must be 18 years of age to enter and entry fee is $12 for three games. Strike pot tickets along with high game and high series pots will also be available. Quickly, here are the leaders of the Elks City Tournament after the first week: Men Singles — 1. Bob Standley, 711. Doubles — Mike Baumgartner-Chuck Bartels, 1,363. Team — Arv's Team, 3,281. Women Singles — 1. Jean Ostlie, 734. Doubles — Lisa Dunn-Jean Ostlie, 1,439. Team — Just Do It 2, 3,373. And finally, check the GFBA website, www.gfba.mtsa.com, for results after the first week of the Great Falls Junior Bowling Association City Tournament. A senior bowler — and a lefthander at that — led the week's scores. Darwin Reeve, bowling in the Tuesday Men at the Elks, tossed the top series with a 735 set, highlighted by games of 267 and 254. Other top men's series included a 720 by John Kurtz out at Aces High. Kurtz had games of 267 and 235. Mike Bowles recorded a 718 Saturday Mixers at Pin & Cue. Bowles had games of 228, 246 and 244. Jim Esther also recorded a 718 set in the MixMasters at Little's, topped by a 279 game. The base lanes turned in the top women's score, a 662 by Patty Morris. Morris' set included games of 206, 212 and 244. Pam Brendgord turned games of 235, 200 and 200 into the high women's score of the week at Little's, a 635. Brendgord, bowling in the Casino League at Little's, beat out Judy Jackson by a stick. Karin Osborn's 605 topped the women at the Elks. Barb Walker's 246 game and 610 series led the women at Pin & Cue. Out at Murph's, Amber Brandt's 221 game and Rich Fisher's 225 game and 642 series were the highs.
