Pair of bowlers get 300s |
|
After a relatively quiet Jaunary and
February devoid of 300 games, the first two perfect games of
2005 came last week in league play. If you ever watched Randall Reeve bowl, you knew sooner or later the talented righthander would throw a perfect 300 game. Reeve, who possesses one of the stronger games in the area, achieved a career first last Wednesday night at the Elks, putting together the perfect 12 strikes for his first-ever perfect game. Two nights later, out at Aces High, John Kurtz rolled his second career 300 game Friday night and first at the Malmstrom lanes since 1996. "It's my first," said Reeve, who I caught up with this past weekend while he was running the clock for the Northern C Divisional boys' basketball tournament at Four Seasons Arena. "I wasn't nervous before the last ball, but after I struck I was plenty nervous after." The 300 followed a pair of 225 efforts that gave the Dutton rancher a 750 series on the evening. "All of the strikes were right in the pocket," said Reeve. "I thought for sure going into the 10th frame I was going to get tapped on one of the balls, especially on the last one. "The last ball was right in the pocket and all 10 pins went to the back." Kurtz finished the night with a 753 set, adding a 259 and a 194 to his 300. The 300s are the city's fourth and fifth of the season. Reeve, whose perfect game was the second rolled downtown, and Kurtz join Greg Thomas, Dave Jacobs and Rod Hackett on this season's 300 club.
Horenberger, always a threat to put a big score on the board, reeled off games of 258, 278 and 268 on Feb. 16 to record an 804, which is a new record for the base house. Congratulations, Shawn.
"The conditions were pretty tough," said Steffani, who defeated Helena's John Brodersen, 196-192, in the championship match. "You were pretty lucky if you could average 185 on Sunday." The veteran Brodersen, a three-time champion of the event himself, had a chance to defeat Steffani but opened in the final frame — cherry picking the 1-2-5 leave — to give the former U.S.A. team member the match and the $1,600 first-prize check. "Yeh, John's open gave me the win, but I was solid in the pocket in the ninth, 10th and 11th frames and couldn't double." Steffani said. "I bowled much better than I scored." Besides the $1,600 first-place prize, Steffani also earns a berth into next year's U.S. Open and $600 in expense money. Brodersen advanced to the final with a 232-179 victory over Butte's Nate Gelling in the semifinal match. He also defeated Missoula's Arnie Diaz, 205-195, and Livingston's Andrew Kitts, 233-189, on his march to the final. Brodersen collected $1,200 for second. Tourney director Michelle Anderson reported a total of 98 entries in the men's event. Great Falls' Bernie Dickman Jr., with a 1,789, was the high Saturday qualifier and he finished 19th in the tourney. In the women's tourney, Missoula's Mary Porter downed Bozeman's Karen Bockemuehl, 192-189, to capture the top prize. Porter ended the match-play portion as the top seed and watched Bockemuehl, who was the high Saturday qualifier with a 1,675 total, beat Missoula's Dawn Hanninen, 201-191, and Bozeman's Doreen Nyby, 234-166, to advance to the final. In the opening match of the stepladder, Nyby edged Helena's Sharon Eslick, 182-181. Porter's win was worth $600 and qualified her for the next U.S. Women's Open, although tourney officials are considering changing that entry to the upcoming WIBC Queen's Tournament in Tulsa. "We don't have any idea if and when they will be holding another U.S. Open, so we my opt to send Porter to the Queen's," said Anderson. Bockemuehl collected $400 for second-place. Shawna Lane was the top Great Falls bowler, with a ninth-place finish. Guyla Streit shared 15th with Missoula's Becky Wierich, after Wierich withdrew four games into match play with a hand injury. Streit, who happened to be in the right place at the right time, took Wierich's place. The women's tourney drew a record 41 entries.
