YABA honors three; four local bowlers win YBC titles

The local Youth America Bowling Association (YABA) has announced it will add three more to its hall of fame in ceremonies May 13 at Black Eagle Community Center.

Jerry Depping, Barb Lankford and Frankie Matchett will be honored in induction ceremonies, which will be held in conjunction with the GFBA and GFWBA induction ceremonies.

Depping was a coach at Pin & Cue from 1971 until 1985, helping many bowlers make it into the Coca-Cola national tournament. Depping, known primarily as the man behind the scenes, always coached with his humor and preached to always have fun.

For Lankford, it will be a dual induction. She will also be one of five inducted the same night into the GFWBA hall of fame. Most noteworthy of Lankford's junior efforts was a 1986 appearance in the national Coke tournament. She held the high girls' average in the state between 1985-1987 and in 1987 won the YABA Outstanding Junior Bowler Scholarship.

Matchett, who is already a member of both the Montana State YABA Hall of Fame as well as the Great Falls WIBC Hall of Fame, began working with junior bowlers in 1970. She organized youth leagues and coached at Skyway and Pin & Cue until 1992 when she retired.

Lankford along with Guyla Streit, Georgia Beaulieu, Pin & Cue's Norma Miller and the late Kit Blue will be honored by the GFWBA.

The GFBA inductees include Don Jordan, Little's manager Mel Willey and Dom Fontana.

The banquet begins at 6 with no-host cocktails followed by dinner and ceremonies, beginning at 7.

Tickets, $16, are available from your favorite lanes or from any GFBA, GFWBA or YABA board member.

Yours truly will cheerfully serve as master of ceremonies.

  • Great Falls' Shelby Vernon, Amanda Kylio, Adam Reiter and Katie Turrin captured state championships Sunday at the 2005 YBC Pepsi State Tournament, held at Butte's King Pin and Star Lanes.

Vernon won the girls' 11 and under handicap event, while Kylio was the girls' 12 and over handicap winner. Reiter took the boys' 12-and-over handicap division while Turrin, who averaged over 200 in four games of qualifying, won the girls' scratch event.

Vernon's effort was worth a $350 scholarship. Kylio and Reiter earned $300 and $450 stipends, respectively, and also won expense-paid trips to the International Finals to be held in July in Indianapolis.

Turrin won a $250 scholarship and a paid-berth into the Junior Gold Tournament, which will also be held in Indianapolis in July.

Other winners included Helena's Jacob Liston, who was the boys 11-and-under handicap winner, and Kalispell's Zac Wooten, who was the boys' scratch winner.

Great Falls' Shawnee LaPier finished fourth in the girls' 12-and-over handicap division.

The tourney drew 1,011 bowlers into the regional tournaments with 225 qualifying for this past weekend's state finals.

Once again it has been my pleasure to keep you up to date on the events of the past bowling season and this will be the last column of the season. I will try to keep you abreast with the happenings from both state tournaments as well as anything else that may happen in the bowling world during the summer. Don't forget about the May Hall of Fame banquet. I hope to see you there.
