Kernaghan getting call from hall

The owner of three perfect games, a magical 800 series and arguably ranked as one of best team players the state has ever produced, Jim Kernaghan's splendid bowling career will be honored with his induction into the Montana State Bowling Association's Hall of Fame Friday night at Bozeman's Gran Tree Inn.

Ceremonies for Kernaghan, along with Billings' Harold Jones, Libby's David Benefield and Manhattan's Greg Waldon, will begin at 6 with a no-host cocktail hour followed by a dinner and banquet.

"My dad started me when I was eight or nine," Kernaghan said. "I used to bowl at Falls Lanes with a duck ball, which was a little bigger than a softball.

"I shot a 27 my first game. I will always remember."

Later Kernaghan's dad bought him a regular bowling ball.

"I remember I used to put the ball on the handle bars of my bike and ride to either Falls Lanes or Little's," Kernaghan said.

In his 20s, Glenn Rose took Kernaghan under his wing. "He really helped me develop," Kernaghan said.

Under Rose's watchful eye, Kernaghan became a talented scratch bowler, capturing six scratch titles during his career.

He was also part of successful teams winning state titles in 1980, 1984, 1994 and 1995.

Like his father, Kernaghan became a huge supporter of the sport by sponsoring teams and tournaments through his business.

"My dad began sponsoring teams back in 1952 and we have sponsored teams ever since then," said Kernaghan. "I just love the sport and I am sure thrilled to be inducted into the state hall of fame."

Health problems have diminshed Kernaghan's bowling the last few years, but he remains a staunch supporter.

Kernaghan will be introduced Friday night by fellow state hall of fame member Steve Lyczewski.

  • At the final Montana Mountain Glass Ladies Traveling Club stop of the season, held recently at the Elks Lanes, Mary Porter defeated Sherrie Lien, 192-183, in a matchup of Missoula bowlers to capture the title.

Porter advanced to the title match with a huge 246-154 victory over Butte's Kathy Davis.

Davis earned the right to bowl Porter with a 216-136 victory over Fort Benton's Guyla Streit, who opened the stepladder with a 185-180 win over Bozeman's Jamie Webster.

A total of 20 bowlers competed in the event, which wrapped up the club's season.

It was a strong week for Malmstrom bowlers as John Kurtz, who has already recorded a 300 game this season, just missed adding an 800 series to his repetoire tallying a 783 last week in the Intramural League at Aces High. The 783 was high for the week in the city.

Patty Morris, bowling in Malmstrom's Thursday Mixed Doubles, shot the high women's score last week with a 678, topped by a huge 274 game.

Jim Pickering's 730 series and Barb Walker's 617 led the scores at the Elks. Pickering, bowling in the Bull Elks, had games of 254, 244 and 232. Walker, in the Friday Mixed, turned in games of 245 and 212.

At Little's, Bruce Hruska's 750 series, with games of 257, 257 and 236, led the men. Karin Osborn's 235 game and 637 series was high for the women.

Bob Chesko was high for the men at Black Eagle with a big 685 set, coming on games of 246 and 227. Stretch Richard's 215 game and 574 in the Black Eagle Seniors earned women's honors.

Don White tossed a nice 729 series, sparked by a 289 game, to earn honors at Pin & Cue. Nobi Sirucek's 254 game and 652 set topped the women's scores.

At Murph's, Robert Rioux's 675 series, with 256 game, in the Friday Alibi league led the men. Debbie Petrini's 209 game was high for the women.

Dusty Kline deserves mention after tossing a nice 245 game and 686 set at Rudyard's K-Lines.

Last week, I misspoke when I said the 2007 YABA State Tournament would be held in Great Falls. The site for the tournament has not yet been selected.
