Tournament competitors got a surprise at Little's

What a difference a little more oil makes!

Bowlers competing in this past weekend's Coors Light-John Willey Memorial Open got a little surprise Saturday morning — a different Little's Lanes shot.

"It was certainly different than what I was expecting," said two-time defending champion Chuck Groat. "It certainly surprised me."

"It certainly was different," said two-time champion Mark Hodges, of Butte. "You expect one shot and you get entirely different shot than you expected.

"I thought at first I was just throwing the ball badly."

The change in setup certainly was the talk of the day, but it also made for some interesting first-day qualifying scores.

It only took a 188 average over eight games to make the cut, one of the lowest totals in many years of the tourney.

"You usually have to go over a 200 average to make it," said Hodges. "I never thought I'd make it being under."

Calgary's Lorry Ho set the pace with a 1,867 eight-game set for a 223 average, but the totals dropped off sharply from there.

Only 13 bowlers were over the 200-mark, with Rich "I got a check" Crawford coming in at exactly 1,600. That left 18 bowlers making the cut at less than 200 — starting with Butte's Jim MacKenzie, at 7 under, and ending with Bozeman's Hank Illum, who was 96 under.

"That's amazing," said Hodges. "I would never have thought it would have gone that much under."

A midweek malfunction in Little's oil machine set up the situation.

When the oiler was repaired it laid out a little more conditioner than usual.

"I thought it was a good change," said Little's Mel Willey. "It made the bowlers work a little harder to find the shot."

By Sunday's match-play portion, most of the bowlers had figured it out.

Eventual winner Paul Dehn averaged 223.75 over 12 games, while Groat, who struggled on Saturday, rebounded with a 221.25 effort on Sunday.

  • Dehn's victory proved popular to the home crowd gathered at Little's.

His victory was the first for a Great Falls bowler since Ken Curry's win in 2000.

"I've always wanted to win this tournament," said Dehn. "I've dreamed about it and it has been a big goal of mind for a long, long time."

Dehn's victory was no fluke. The hard-throwing lefthander won 11 out of 12 matches, never had a game below 200 and reeled off games of 279, 236, 233 and 232 among his match-play games.

Asked if he rather bowl in other games of the stepladder, or wait out the finals as the No. 1 seed, Dehn said, "There's no doubt, I like to watch and wait."

  • Finally, some kudos go out to Duane Zeier, for his wonderful computer work during the tourney. His work kept everyone up to date.

Also, bowlers like Steve Howse, Kyle Grossman, Ryan Moody, Brad Harthun, John Kurtz, Mike Christensen and John Balzarini need mentioning. They didn't make the cut, and maybe they didn't bowl as well as they wanted, but they had the courage to give it a try.

Good luck to all of them.

Tidbits: This came in from Fred and Belinda Sadler who relayed that 10 years ago this month, Bryon Mullett and Fred, himself, rolled 300s on the same night at Ace's High out at Malmstrom. Last month, Duane Zeier and Wayne Mauer matched Mullett and Sadler's feat rolling perfect games on the same night at the Elks ... Rod Hackett reminds Elks members that the Great Hurrah 2 regional tournament begins this weekend in Great Falls at Elks Lanes ... A pair of youth bowlers collected Western Montana Youth Traveling League stops Sunday in Great Falls at Pin & Cue. Steve Quinby won the 14 and over title with a 226-209 win over Whitefish's Zach Wooten. Eric Crawford claimed the 14 and under title. Great jobs.

Not much room left, but a few honor scores need at least a mention. First, Donnie Zuhoski put together games of 267, 249 and 256 for a 751 series, the tops around the city last week and one of the better scores of season thus far. Doris Kimmerle's 649 in the MixMasters was high for the women.

Les Bruner stared down the barrel of a 300 game last Monday in the 535 League at Pin & Cue after stringing the first 11. Bruner, trying to record his second perfect game in three years, threw an awkward 7-count on his final ball for a nice 297 and finished with a 697. Nobi Sirucek's 623 led the women's scores on the westside.

Lucas Cyr just missed a 700 set during the Wednesday Men's League at Murph's reeling off games of 218, 235 and 245 for a 698.

Curt Backa, the cause of most oil machine malfunctions, is a Tribune sports and news copy editor and resident bowling mook. Backa, a John Willey Open wannabee, can be reached at 791-6569, (800) 438-6600 or e-mailed at cbacka@greatfal.gannett.com
