 Standleys lead City Mixed tournament

Bob Standley fired a huge 698 series, on games of 226 and 258, to propel him and his wife, Dee, to the top of the standings after the first weekend of the Great Falls City Mixed Tournament at the Elks.

The Standleys totaled 1,473 with handicap to lead the doubles. They hold a 63-pin lead over the mother and son team of Shirley and Bill Christianson, who have a 1,410. The Christiansons were paced by Bill's 675 set.

In third are Ruth Rogers and Jay Tuss, who have a 1,381.

In the team standings, Team Croskrey, which featured Tracy Rigor, Burt Tschetter and Tom and Connie Croskrey, combined for a 2,840 total to hold the top spot. Tschetter's 605 series led the foursome.

Team Croskrey leads the Duane Zeier-led Let's Do It by 28 pins after firing a 2,812. Barb Kakalecik's KRCT is currently in third with a 2,802.

Bernie Dickman's 720, on games of 256 and 259, is top score shot by the men. Karin Osborn's 675, with games of 259 and 221, leads the women.

The tournament, which has struggled with entries the past few years, drew 20 teams and 31 entries for the first weekend.

"That's a good first weekend," said Elks manager Rod Hackett. "We think we are going to have a big second weekend.

"We've already had many calls."

Shifts for the last weekend are noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday. On Sunday, teams and doubles can be bowled at noon and 3 p.m.

Phone the Elks at 454-1305 for more information or to reserve a spot.

Mike Bowles, who started and has maintained the site, which by far, is one of the best local bowling web sites in the country, has changed the address to be aligned with last year's merger of the ABC, WIBC and YABA.

Hackett reminds bowlers that the annual Snowball No-Tap Tournament will start at the Elks on Nov. 19.

Some big scores were posted in league play last week led by the big 754 set by Ron Corkin.

Corkin, bowling in the Wednesday Intramural League at Aces High, had games of 249-258 and 247.

Doris Kimmerle's 693 in Little's MixMasters, with games of 235, 224 and 234, was the high for the women.

Around the area's houses, Corkin and Pat Terry tied for men's honors at Little's. Both bowlers turned in 733 efforts in the six-game Straight-A-Way League. Terry's set includes games of 247 and 266. Corkin, who had a 711 in his second three games, had games of 268 and 279.

Bruce Steffani got things going in the Christian Intramural League at Murph's with a nice 743 set, including games of 268, 248 and 227.

Rose Ladinsky's 210 game in the SkyRaiders was the women's highlight of the week on the eastside.

At Pin & Cue, Ken Haugen's 695, on games of 236, 235 and 225, led the men. Nobi Sirucek's 226 game and 549 series topped the women's scores.

Bernie K. Dickman turned in the week's high single game with a 290, bowling in the Jack & Jill League at the Elks. Dickman turned the 290 game into a 700 set, to lead the men.

Kay Kinzinger and Karin Osborn each had 201 games to share women's honors.

Cory Arps' 226 game and Mary Reuter's 212 were the highs at Black Eagle Lanes.

Curt Backa, who faces indefinite suspension by his Wednesday night Business House team, is a Tribune news and sports copy editor and resident bowling mook.
