Columbia Falls' Chris Knudsen captured the men's title,
while Missoula's Tina Davis was the women's
winner at this past weekend's U.S. Open
Qualifier, held at Sleeping Giant Lanes in
Helena.
Knudsen, a relatively new name to scratch
bowling, upset Billings' Ted Bertrand in the
men's championship match to garner the $1,665
first-prize check and a spot in next year's BPAA
U.S. Open.
Bertrand picked up $1,265 for second while
Missoula's Bernie Kuhns Jr. took third pocketing
an even $1,000. Rounding out the stepladder
finalists were Butte's Todd Edelen, who finished
fourth for $770 and Anaconda's Ed Strommen was
fifth and collected $670.
Top Great Falls bowler was Paul Dehn, who turned
a solid seventh-place finish
Davis, a two-time Little's Ladies Classic
winner, beat Bozeman veteran Doreen Nyby in the
women's stepladder finals. Davis' effort was
good for $485 and a berth in the USBC Queen's
Tournament, which will be held June 17-21 in
Reno.
Nyby won $325 for her second-place effort.
Nyby qualified for the final with a victory over
Great Falls' Barb Lankford, who was trying for
her second major title of the season.
Lankford's third place was good for $225.
Missoula's Mary Porter and Debbie Evans took
fourth and fifth, respectively, to round out the
women's top five.
Other Great Falls' bowlers turning in strong
efforts included Shawna Lane, a ninth, Doris
Kimmerle was 11th and Amanda Steffani finished
15th.
There were 115 entries in the men's tourney.
Over 30 signed up for the women's event.
Incidentally, last year's U.S. Open qualifier
winner, Nathan Gelling of Butte, finished 253rd
in this year's Open, which was held two weeks
ago in North Brunswick, N.J. Gelling totaled
3,311 for 18 games for a 183.9 average. Over 460
bowlers competed in the event, which was won by
Patrick Allen.

·
· The second Marty Vigen Memorial Tournament
wrapped up this past weekend at the Elks.
Dale Owen's 1,527 won the handicap division,
while Duane Zeier successfully defended his
scratch title with a 1,288, beating Jody Bastas
by 20 pins.
Robbie Korte finished second in the handicap
division with a 1,468. Joe Korte was third with
a 1,467.
Elks manager Rod Hackett said the lanes will be
playing host to a pair of no-tap events in
March. Watch for details.

·
· Kyle Grossman wanted his first 700 series to be
a good one, and he certainly did that last
Sunday night, rolling a huge 749 series in
Little's Satellite Mixed League.
Grossman, who teamed with Brad Harthun to finish
second in last year's Wild Turkey National
Tournament, reeled off games of 278, 234 and 237
for his first-career 700 series, leading the
week.
For the women, Guyla Streit's streak of three
straight weeks of 700 series came to an end but
her 646 in the 725 Classified at Little's held
up for the women's high for the week.
Around the area houses, Randall Reeves put
together games of 259, 236 and 236 for a 731 set
to lead the men at the Elks. Judy Ryan turned in
games of 212, 209 and 200 for a 621, which was
her career high, led the women.
Dave Capps, a 166-average bowler in the Howard
Ghee Thursday Mixed at Black Eagle, had a big
night last week. Capps had a 245 game, which was
79 pins over his average, and finished with a
648 series, which was 150 over his total
average, to earn men's honors. Autumn Lunde,
also bowling in the Thursday league, exploded
for a 232 game, which was 123 pins over her
average and was high for the women.
Lucas Cyr returned to good form out at Murph's
with a big 718 set, which included games of 259
and 280, to lead the men. Sharon Gribble's 212
and 201 games in the SkyRaiders earned the
women's nod.
Ducky Faler, a senior bowling fixture, took his
game up a couple of notches last week posting a
huge 711 set at Pin & Cue to lead the men.
Faler's series included games of 279 and 235.
Carolyn "Skeeze" Brown led the women with a "no
one shoots a 599", highlighted by games of 236
and 210.
Fort
Benton's Janet Danreuther also gets a mention
after she picked up the Big Four (4-6-7-10)
split last week in the Dust Bowlers League at
Jack's Lanes.
·
·
· Finally, a reminder that the Glenn Rose
Scholarship Tournament will be held March 11-12
at Little's Lanes. Youth bowlers need to get
their entries in early to be able to compete in
this poplar event.
