Bartel converts 300 game

Chuck Bartel, in over 40 years of bowling, has had a few golden opportunities to roll his first-career 300.

Sunday afternoon at the Elks Lanes, he finally took advantage of one of them.

Bartel, bowling in the Elks City Tournament, threw the perfect dozen in his second game of doubles.

"I have had my chances," said Bartel. "I just never could get it done.

"On the last ball, all I was thinking about was staying low and hitting my mark.

"I stayed low, but I didn't hit my mark," Bartel continued. "I was fortunate, I threw it wide but it came back and carried."

"All twelve were pretty much in the pocket."

Bartel's 300 was the 11th rolled this season and fourth bowled at the Elks.

It came on the heels of Russ Simonsen's perfect game bowled in the GFBA City Tournament two weeks ago.

Bartel, who holds a 200 average in two leagues a week, joins Duane Zeier and Wayne Maurer — who tossed perfect games on the same night at the Elks — John Kurtz, Ron Corkin, Jim Aklestad, Doris Kimmerle, Paul Dehn, Bernie Dickman Jr., Pat Terry and Simonsen in this season's perfect game club.

·  ·  ·  Murph's will play host to the 62nd annual GFWBA City Tournament, which will run two weekends, Feb. 18-19 and 25-26.

This year the GFWBA is adding $1,000 in prize money.

Entry forms are available at all lanes and for more information about the tourney phone Ellie Bruner, 761-7467.

·  ·  ·  In other tourney news, Harlem's Charles Gray Boy continues to lead the singles and Joe's Coyotes, with John McBurney, Larry Pemberton, Shane Murphy, Scott Phelps and Joe Goodwin, stayed atop the team standings after the third weekend of the Budweiser Handicap Tournament at Lewistown's Snowy Lanes.

Gray Boy's five-game score to beat is 1,465 and Joe's Coyotes' 3,453 is the top team total.

·  ·  ·  This Sunday, Black Eagle Lanes is playing host to a scratch eliminator tournament.

Bowlers will roll four games of match play moving across the house.

After four games the field will be cut in half for four more games of match play.

The field will be cut to the top five for a stepladder final.

Entries will be limited to 32 and there is a $75 entry fee.

Also this Saturday, the lanes will have a Sneek-A-Peek Monte Carlo starting at 7.

The same oil pattern for the tournament will be laid down for the Monte Carlo. Cost is $12 for three games of bowling.

Phone Anita Christianson, 453-4736, for more information about either event.

Second, Lauretta Gifford rolled her first-ever 700 series.
