A Whitefish standout and a Malmstrom talent
captured titles Sunday at the annual Glenn Rose
Scholarship Tournament, held at Little's Lanes.
Whitefish's Zac Wooten, who had a goal of
winning the Glenn Rose, beat Great Falls' Ronnie
Corkin, 247-165 in the finals to win the scratch
event, while Aces High's Mike Jones defeated
Great Falls' Robbie Schwenck by 12 pins to claim
the handicap final.
Wooten entered the tourney three times, although
his first qualifying attempt would have been
good enough to make Sunday's match-play portion.
"He just wanted to work on mastering the
condition," said tourney organizer Bruce
Steffani. "It's been his goal to win the Glenn
Rose and he wanted to be sure he gave himself a
chance to do it."
Wooten advanced to the final with a 191-173
victory over Helena's Kyle McLean. McLean opened
the finals with a 191-156 victory over Great
Falls' Trent Reeve and followed that with a
209-202 win over last year's champion, Chris
Dunbar of Billings.
Helena's
Brady Kirkeby was Saturday's high qualifier,
averaging a lofty 226.2 over the five games. He
eventually finished ninth.
Wooten pocketed a $500 for his victory. Corkin,
Sunday's top seed, earned a $400 stipend for
second.
Joleen Martinich earned a $200 scholarship for
being the high girl in the scratch division.
In the handicap bracket, Jones earned the
top-seed position and waited as Heather Saubak
defeated Missoula's Kyle Shulund in the opening
match of the stepladder. Robbie Schwenck then
turned back Saubak and Lindsey Brendgord to
advance to the final.
Four of the five finalists were from Great
Falls.
Jones also won a $500 scholarship with Schwenck
collecting $400. Third-place finishers in both
scratch and handicap divisions pocketed $300
stipends. Fourth-place finishers got $200 while
fifth-place finishers received $100.
Thanks to Steffani and his family's tireless
efforts, the top 16 in the scratch division
received scholarships, while the top 24 in the
handicap division won stipends.
The tourney drew 95 entries.

· Malmstrom's Chad Brewer, in only his second
season of league bowling, rolled his
first-career 300 game Monday night at Aces High
Lanes.
Brewer, a 189-average bowler, was competing in
the Monday Short Season Trio league at the base
lanes.
Brewer's 300 was the 13th bowled this season in
the city and third recorded at Aces High. Ron
Corkin and John Kurtz Jr. tossed perfect games
at Malmstrom last fall.

· This weekend bowling in the state of Montana
takes another big step as delegates will gather
at Bozeman's Comfort Inn to elect officers and
board members for the Montana State USBC.
The Montana State Association, the Montana State
Women's Association and the Montana State Junior
Bowling Association will merge into one identity
led by a single set of officers and a board of
directors.
All three associations have spent over a year in
a transition mode and the results of that work
will be unveiled this weekend.
I don't get political in my column too often,
but I must offer the delegates and new officers
a few words of simple advice — bowling is just a
game and the average everyday league bowler just
wants to enjoy it.

· Finally, the cream of the city's high school
crop of bowlers will be on display Thursday
afternoon at Murph's. Great Falls High and C.M.
Russell bowling leagues will vie in their second
bowl-off of the season. Action starts at 3:45
p.m.
