Great Falls southpaw places second north of border
A Great Falls lefthander faring well in Canada; a city women's tournament not forgotten and a Little's bowler comes within a wobbling 10-pin of a perfect game and an 800 series are some of the kegling highlights from the past week.

First, Roger Wirtanen led a large contingent of Great Falls bowlers across the border this past weekend at the Budweiser Open, held at the Top 10 Bowling Center in Lethbridge.

Wirtanen finished second in the unique double-elimination tourney, falling to Billings' Ted Bertrand in the final match.

Wirtanen pocketed $1,090 Canadian for the effort and he was one of five Electric City bowlers to make the top-16 cut.

Ken Curry, Duane Zeier, Bruce Steffani and Donnie White were the others in the top 16.

Keith Albert finished third with Calgary's Jack Guay taking fourth and Missoula's Arnie Diaz in fifth.

The tourney drew 69 entries.

·  ·  ·  In all the hubbub of the U.S. Open qualifier and the various prep basketball tournaments, I forgot to post the results from the 62nd annual Great Falls Women's Bowling Association Tournament, which wrapped up two Sundays ago at Murph's Party Bowl.

Chris Dittus and Francie LaPierre captured the singles' titles.

Dittus dialed in for a 695 for the Division I title, while LaPierre turned in a 723 in Division II.

Belt bowlers swept the doubles titles as Lisa Urick and Shannon Osterman won the Division I title with a 1,402. Osterman went on to also claim the handicap all-events.

Patty Vaskey and Sana Skelton, who are actually from Geyser, were the Division II champs.

Murph's, with Shawna Lane, Guyla Streit, Julie Buchanan and Dorothy, were the Division I team champs, with a 2,556. Lane parlayed her team event win and a second in singles into the scratch all-events title.

Sisters Are We, which included Mary Ann Beck, Alice Martin, Dee Standley and Lorraine Peressini, captured Division II honors.

The tourney attracted 43 teams and 80 doubles' entries.

"We are very pleased with the turnout," said tourney organizer Ellie Bruner.

Here are the top three in each event:

Mike Carrethers opened last Wednesday's set in the MixMasters with a simple spare and then proceeded to reel off 11 in a row for a big 290 game.

After a 226 game, Carrethers got it going again in the third game and put together the first nine in a row.

With a second career 300 game and a first-ever 800 series on the line, Carrethers' 10th-frame ball left him and many others in Little's Lanes in near disbelief.

Carrethers went flush in the pocket but a stubborn 10-pin failed to fall after going halfway over.

"I can't believe it didn't go over," said bystander Howard Clodfelter. "It had to go."

Still the talented righthander finished with a 279 game and 795 series to lead the week.

Carrethers just edged Ken Curry, who turned in consistent games of 247, 268 and 268 for a 783, for top honors.

TIDBITS:The annual Glen Rose Youth Scholarship Tournament will be held March 18-19 at Little's. I had the wrong date last week. ... Donnie Zuhoski already has 11 career 300 games. I missed his total by one in a recent column. ... Vernons No. 2 currently lead the Family No-Tap Trio tourney, while Ole Folks, with a 3,261, top the Spring Revenge No-Tap tourney. Both tourneys are in progress at the Elks. ... The Gary Gearhardt Memorial Tourney will be held this Sunday at Country Lanes in Bozeman. This will be the last major tournament to be held at the lanes, which were recently sold and will close down on May 31. More on the closure in another column. ... Close but no cigar for Walter Ray Williams who is trying to tie the legendary Earl Anthony in career PBA wins. Williams, gunning for his 41st victory, fell in the title match of the Pepsi Championships at the fabled Rivera Lanes in Fairlawn, Ohio, to former pro tennis player Chris Collins, 245-201.
