Inductions provided an interesting, fun evening

The bowling worlds of Great Falls, Butte, Whitehall and Livingston got to know each other a little better last Friday night as the Montana USBC installed a deserving six in ceremonies at the Town House Inn.

Butte's Bob Schulte opened the evening telling us a little about Frankie Johns.

We learned that the late Johns was one of the premier bowlers of his time in the Mining City and if anybody needed some bowling help, all they needed to do was visit the Corner Bar, where the beloved Frankie tended bar, but only during television commercials.

We also learned that the Hall of Famer Schulte, himself, played in the very first Shrine football game, was a member of the Butte Sports Hall of Fame. Schulte, sporting a bright green blazer signifyng his membership in the Butte hall, was asked many times what year he won the Masters.

From Mike Hardesty, we learned that Livingston's Isadore "Izzy" Kadrmas was one of the best bowling teachers around.

Kadrmas also loved to travel and bowl, competing and winning many tourney titles in his lifetime.

And true to his personable name "Izzy," we found somebody we surely would love to hang around with.

Bill Meagor told us of the bowling life of Harry Shaffer Sr.

Meagor introduced us to Shaffer's widow and children and told us after years of being a top bowler, Shaffer was giving back to the sport he loved by becoming active in the Butte bowling association before cancer tragically took his life in 1998.

Jim Kernaghan then poked fun at our own Mel Willey before informing us of 'Mr Mel's' significant contribution to Special Olympics and his active push to keep scratch bowling alive.

Little did we know of Willey's prowess for public speaking.

It was Meagor's turn again and he regaled us on how to roast a "Goose," in the form of Whitehall's Bob Shaw. We learned how Shaw got his nickname, when he started to wear his brightly colored shirts and that he traveled over the dangerous Homestake Pass nightly to bowl in leagues in Butte. The Goose also did his best to keep his hometown establishment, Ropers Lanes, in business and that he is now serving a term on the new state board of directors and will be active in running next year's state tourney in Butte.

Finally, the dapper Donnie Zuhoski let us know a little more about Don Jordan.

Zuhoski laid out Jordan's involvement in youth bowling, his many years of service on both the local and state boards and that he took special care to make sure bowling young adults became actively involved in the sport.

We also got to see what Jordan looked like in a dress — or was that Zuhoski.

In the Electric City Side Tournament, going on at the Elks, Butte's Pat O'Rourke leads the four-game singles with a 976. M&L Supply, also out of Butte, tops the team trio standings with a 2,205.

The tourney, running concurrently with the state tourney, will run seven more weeks.

Phone the Elks at 454-1305 for shift times and more information.

Speaking of the state tournament, look for results for both the Montana USBC and Montana Women's State Tourney in Tuesdays' editions of the Tribune.

Congratulations to my compadre Bill Bighaus at the Billngs Gazette, who was inducted as an honorary member of the Billings Hall of Fame. Bighaus, besides his local kegling news, provided solid coverage of the Magic City's effort to procure the 2002 ABC National Tournament and kept his readers updated with news from the tourney.

The month of April signals the end for many leagues but there are still a lot of big scores rolling in.

The Elks' Jeff Dennen led the week with a strong 754 effort in the Tuesday Men's League downtown. Dennen's series included games of 275, 242 and 236.

Doris Kimmerle led the women's effort this week with a pair of scores. Kimmerle fired games of 213, 202 and 256 for a 671 in Little's MixMasters and followed that the next night with games of 207, 212 and 254 for a 673 in the 725 Classified. Judy Jackson also deserves mention for her 268 game, part of a 647 set in the Casino League.

John Balzarini led the men at Little's with a 746 set, sparked by a 268 game, in the Friday Straight-A-Way League.

All season the Wednesday Men's Handicap League has produced big scores. No different this week as Butch Preston went big with a 739 series, reeling off games of 253, 233 and 246.

Pin & Cue's numbers picked up this week as senior Jack Skinner topped the men with a 644 effort, on consistent 215, 216 and 213 efforts. Linda Michel's 211 and 216 games and 587 series were high for the women.

No one shoots 699, but Bob Chesko did in last week's Black Eagle Seniors League. Chesko's set was highlighted by a 258 game. Roxie Arps' 225 game was good for women's honors.

Chesko's 699 was matched by Bryon Mullett last Thursday in the Aces High Mixed Doubles League. Mullett had games of 242 and 235.

Tops for the women at the Elks was Jean Ostlie, who tossed a nice 249 game.

Curt Backa, who survived another visit by Butte's Shaffer brothers last Friday, is a Tribune sports and news copy editor and resident bowling fixture. Backa can be reached at 791-6569, (800) 438-6600 or e-mailed at cbacka@greatfal.gannett.com
