1-16-2007 Best bowlers over 80 to kick off city tournament in Black EagleA long tradition continues Saturday morning when the annual Honors Team will help kick off the first-ever GFUSBCA City Tournament at Black Eagle Lanes. In a tradition that goes back many years the oldest, or should I say most mature, regular-league bowlers will be paired together on a team to help with the opening ceremonies. This year's veteran squad consists of Les Hackett, Carroll Patton, Henry Baker, Wendell Peck and Rudy Harms. I believe all members of the team are over 80 years of age. The festivities will start at 11 a.m. If you haven't gotten your entry in for the tourney, it isn't too late, although squad times for the team event may be limited because Black Eagle has only eight lanes. Shift times for team are 11 a.m., 2:30 and 6 p.m. on Saturdays. On Sundays, teams may bowl at 10 a.m. or 1:30. The doubles and singles, which will be bowled at Murph's Party Bowl, are 10:30 a.m., 1:30 and 4:30 on Saturdays. On Sundays, they are 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The tourney will run this weekend and Jan. 27-28. Bowlers have until the Thursday before each weekend to enter. Entry fee is $20 per person an event and forms can be picked up at all local lanes. Phone tournament director Willie McGee at 781-5244 or 453-7801 for more information. According to McGee, entries are a little up this year. · n n Great Falls bowlers were shut out of the top five spots in this past weekend's $2,500-added Miller Masters, held at Helena's Sleeping Giant Lanes. In the end it was Bernie Kuhns who defeated Glasgow's Mike Johnson to capture his first Miller Masters title. Kuhns' victory earned the Missoula bowler the top prize of $1,500. Johnson pocketed $1,300 for second. Billings' Rich Westberg finished third followed by Missoula's Andy Kost. Calgary's Corey Clayton and two-time John Willey winner Chuck Groat, of Salt Lake, tied for fifth in the double-elimination event. Top Electric City bowler was Bruce Steffani, who finished ninth. Past Miller champion Paul Dehn was 17th. Shawn Jacobs was the top Capital City bowler in ninth. John Brodersen turned in a 13th-place finish. · n n This weekend the 2007 $2,000-added Budweiser Handicap Tournament begins five weekends of action at Lewistown's Snowy Lanes. Tourney manager Rex Coleman reports that the shifts are filling up the final three weekends and prime spots are available this weekend and next. Phone Coleman at 877 538-3473 to make a reservation for the tourney, which features a five-person team and a six-game singles event. · n n Cut Bank's Glacier Lanes will hold the first Glacier County USBC Men's and Women's Invitational Tournament. The tourney will be held Jan. 23, 25, 27 and 28. Phone Glacier Lanes, 873-4018, for more information. · n n Locally, Les Bruner teased the magic 800 mark last week, reeling off games of 269, 264 and 255 for a huge 788 series to set the top mark last week. Bruner was bowling in the popular Monday 535 League at Pin & Cue, where scores seem to be improving more each week. For the women, Heather Vukasin, bowling in the Friday Mixed at the Elks, turned in games of 231, 213 and 211 for a 655 series. It was one of the few weeks in memory where a Little's bowler did earn one of the top spots. Speaking of, Brian Lee wasn't too far behind posting a nice 762, on games of 279 and 269, in the Wednesday MixMasters at Little's. Lee's 279 game was part of a big three-game 800 scratch team score turned in by Wilfray MFG. Other games included Steve Martin's 264 and Rich Crawford's 257. Doris Kimmerle's 234 game and 650 series was high for the women downtown. Leading the men at the Elks was Dave Gifford's 235 game and 646 series. Norma Miller's 204 game and 589 set was high for the women at Pin & Cue. At Black Eagle, Suann Konesky rolled a 256 game and 626 series in the Monday Volunteers. The game was 116 pins over her 140 norm, while the series was 206 total pins over. Out at Murph's, Butch Preston set the men's mark with a 681 series, on games of 265 and 231. Shelly Scott's 206 game earned women's honors. Curt Backa, who is wondering if is too late to jump on the Saints' bandwagon, is a Tribune sports and news copy editor and resident kegling junkie.
