1-9-2007 Egan becomes first woman to win 40-90 Doubles tourneyIt will be remembered as an historic day in local bowling circles. Not only did Kristen Egan become the first woman to make the finals of the Coors Light-Santy Agency 40-90 Doubles, but with the able assistance of partner Jack Guay, she won it.
Jack Guay, left and Kristen Egan. "It was pretty much a mistake that we are together," said Calgary's Guay, who captured his second 40-90 title. "I found out late in the week one of my partners couldn't come, so I had to find somebody. "I picked Kristen just to make her brother (Paul Dehn) mad. He's wanted to bowl with me since he became eligible a couple of years ago." The duo qualified fourth after Sunday's seven games of match play and in the opening match of the stepladder finals disposed of Tom Brendgord and Don White, 290-230. Egan's first-frame nine count stopped the pair from shooting a rare Baker 300. "After that game, I was looking for a new partner," Guay joked. Egan and Guay then defeated the Great Falls' twosome of Roger Wirtanen and Wayne Quinby, 225-183, and advanced to the final with a 202-169 win over Great Falls' Rich Crawford and Kalispell's Rick Perry, a former winner returning to bowl in the tourney after a two-year absence. In the final, they met the formidable duo of Helena's Ron Briggeman and John Brodersen, who were seeking their third title. Briggeman and Brodersen dominated the qualifying, winning every match. Brodersen fired a 299 game and an 800 series during the run. Egan and Guay dismantled the Helena union 246-174 stringing together a five-bagger late in the match to seal the victory. "Kristen bowled well all day," said Guay. "She picked me up in the middle of the day when we needed it." "I wasn't really nervous," said Egan. "I've known Jack for a long time and I really didn't feel a lot of pressure." Egan and Guay split the first-place prize of $960. Bordersen and Briggeman shared $660 for second. Egan and Guay's performance overshadowed the weekend turned in by Great Falls' Mike Judd. Judd beat all comers Saturday night in the Over 40 Scratch Classic stunning Perry in the final match 212-180 to collect the $600 first prize. "I have been bowling pretty well the last two weeks," said Judd. "But nothing that would have told me I would win this." Judd, who previously won the 1998 Rainier Masters in Helena, finished fifth in Saturday's five-game qualifying and then went through the double-elimination match play undefeated beating Missoula's Chris Leary, 214-182; Brodersen, 168-148; and Guay, 244-204, to reach the final. In Saturday's other stepladder matches, Wirtanen opened with a 214-213 victory over Guay. Perry then defeated Wirtanen 278-221. Perry pocketed $400 for second, while Wirtanen earned $300 for third. "To beat Perry, who was coming off a 278, was something," said Judd. "Everything just fell right." On Sunday, Judd capped the weekend rolling his third-career 300 game during the 40/90 doubles. Also bowling a 300 on Sunday was Butte's Mark Hodges. It was his 49th career perfect game. It took a 1001, or one-over, over five games to make the cut in the singles. Other cashiers in the doubles included Willie McGee and Steve Martin, who finished sixth and collected $250. Hodges along with partner John Hall took seventh, good for $210. The singles drew 51 entries, while 27 doubles teams started Sunday morning. The top bowlers from around the area move onto Helena this weekend for the 24th annual Gusto Miller Masters at Sleeping Giant Lanes. An estimated $2,500 has been added to the tourney, which will open with six games of qualifying on Saturday. Shift times are 9 a.m., 1 and 5 p.m. The field will be cut to the top 32 for Sunday's double-elmination match play. Entry fee for the event is $125, with $100 for re-entries. Phone Sleeping Giant at 442-1004 for more information or reserve a qualifying spot. The Elks Sno-Ball No-Tap Tournament wrapped up for the second time Sunday with RC's of Great Falls, Connie and Tom Croskrey and Tracy and Rex Rigor, holding on to the top sport with a 3,176. RC's beat Belt's In The Gutter, Sandy and Wayne Francom and Tina and Bob Berard, by 11 pins. It was another abbreviated week around the area lanes with a Pin & Cue bowler firing the top score for the men and a familiar face leading the women. Jay Schmidt, bowling in the M.F.C.U. League on the westside, put together games of 231, 266 and 225 for a 726, which led the men's scores. Schmidt just edged Dave McGillis, who tossed a nice 721, with a 276 game, in the Utility League at Little's. Guyla Streit, bowling in the 725 Classified at Little's, reeled off games of 233, 201 and 257 for a 691 for women's honors. At the Elks, Chuck Bartel, in the Friday Mixed, turned in a nice 259 game and 676 series for the men. Kay Kinzinger's 219 game led the women. Ken Ferguson strung the first 11 strikes in the Tuesday Men's League, but couldn't quite get the last one for a 298 game. High game for the week goes to Don Richards, who strung the first 11 in the Aces High Intramural League, only to leave the 5-pin on a Brooklyn hit in the final frame. Bob Chesko continued his solid season with a 661 set highlighted by a 268 game at Black Eagle. Roxie Arps was high for the women at Pin & Cue with a 612 set boosted by a 254 game. Tony Milovich paced the men at Murph's with a 679 series, on a pair of 234 games. Cheryl Gilbert's 210 game was high for the women.
