Scores climb steadily higher in G.F. bowling

Only a few weeks into the season, and the scores are going higher and higher. We've already had a pair of 300s — by Terry Brus and Brian Christianson — and last week we had our second 800 of the season as Jeff Dennen tossed a huge 822 in the Utility League Friday night at Little's.

Dennen, who can score at most any place he bowls, turned in games of 288, 279 and 255.

"I got my 800 before I got my 300," said Dennen, whose previous high series was a 761.

"And, I've had many chances to get my 300."

Dennen, a righthander, opened with the first 10 strikes in both the first and second games.

"I left a ringing 10-pin in the first game and in the second the ball stuck on my thumb and it went high," Dennen said. "I had two good chances to get a 300."

After the first two games, Dennen said he had thoughts about breaking the 857 city record, currently held by Terry Pearsall, who shot the season's first 800 last week.

"No doubt, I was thinking about the city record and the 857," Dennen said.

In all, Dennen finished with 29 strikes over the three-game set.

"I never had to make a move," Dennen said. "The only thing I had to do was adjust my speed."

Dennen, who averages between 190 and 200, bowls two nights a week, including a Wednesday night gig at the Elks.

"I've tried to move around," Dennen said. "I don't want to get too comfortable staying at the same house.

"Believe me, I was a little leary about moving to Little's. It has an awfully good shot."

·  Paul Dehn will be back to defend his Coors Light-John Willey Memorial title, which returns to Little's Lanes this weekend.

Dehn, the hard-throwing lefthander, defeated two-time champion Chuck Groat, 207-162, in last year's championship game, denying the Utah bowler a third straight title.

Groat will also be back as well as former champion Jack Guay, of Calgary.

The Canadian is coming off of a strong summer of competition, including a ninth-place finish — he flirted making the finals — in this past July's U.S. Senior Open in Las Vegas.

Shift times Saturday for qualifying are 8 a.m., 1 and 7 p.m. Sunday's match-play rounds are scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m.

The stepladder finals usually start around 3 p.m.

There are still plenty of spots available and entry fee for the event, which annually draws the top kegling talent from around the region, is $150.

Phone Little's, 452-4116, for more information about the tourney.

·  Snowy Lanes' Rex Coleman said that spots for the upcoming Montana State Mixed Tournament are filling up fast and recommends bowlers get their entries in early.

The tourney, which includes a four-person team event (two men, two women) and a mixed doubles, runs the last two weekends of this month and the first two weekends in November.

Phone Coleman at 535-3473 for more information.

·  Dennen's 822 hogged most of the attention last week but there are few other scores that deserve notice.

Dawn Rambo-Orr continued her fine early-season bowling. Rambo-Orr, bowling in Little's MixMasters, fired a 718 on games of 226, 247 and 245. Her 718 led the women last week.

Bob Orham fired a nice 744 in the Friday Straight-A-Way League, punctuated by a 279 high single.

At Pin & Cue, Joe Skaggs carried the men with a 663 set highlighted by a 257 game. Chris Dittus' 200 game and 567 series led the women.

Murph's reported a few more good scores, led by Lucas Cyr, who fired a 233 and 230 on his way to a 674 set. Monica Furst, bowling in the Friday Alibi, tallied a 214 game and 541 series for the women.

Rod Hackett showed how it was done at the Elks with a 277 game and 686 series. Janice Zigan earned women's honors with a 256 game, an impressive 102 pins over her average and giving her the USBC Century Award.

Curt Backa, never a threat to claim a century award, is a Tribune news and sports copy editor, and resident bowling blow-hard. Backa, when not watching his beloved Razorbacks dump No. 2 Auburn Saturday, can be reached at 791-6569, 800 438-6600 or e-mailed at cbacka@greatfal.gannett.com
