Bowles rolls first 300 game

Mike Bowles possesses the perfect name for a kegler. He is also now the owner of the perfect game.

Bowles rolled his first-career 300 game last Monday night in Pin & Cue's 535 League.

"I have to say I was pretty nervous," said Bowles, in his familiar southern twang. "But, I have to say all 12 strikes were right in the pocket. I didn't have any lucky ones."

The 300 was the first bowled this season on the westside and 10th rolled in the city so far this season.

"I was worried about the strike in the 11th," Bowles said. "It came into the pocket a little light, but it carried."

It was the first time Bowles had put the first 11 strikes together, and was able to collect his 300 on his first try.

Bowles, who is the secretary of the Great Falls USBC, finished with a strong 755 series, adding games of 245 and 210.

"After the 300 I just wanted to make sure I got my seven," said Bowles.

Bowles joins Doris Kimmerle, Rich Fisher, Randy Guill, Pat Terry, Mike Judd, Brian Christianson, Glenn Jeffrey III, Butch Preston and Terry Brus, who tossed the first 300 of the year at Murph's, in this year's 300 club.

Guyla Streit also is a member of the club. She rolled her first-career 300 in a women's traveling stop at Missoula's Westside Lanes.

Bowles' perfect-game exploits led a big week of scores from around the area.

Tom Brendgord almost matched Bowles' perfect game tossing a 298 game — leaving the 3-6 spare on his final ball. It wasn't all bad for Brendgord, he finished with a huge 778 series adding games of 226 and 254.

Doris Kimmerle led the women last week with an even 700 series in Little's 725 Classified League, throwing games of 232, 225 and 243.

Also at Little's, Charlie Compton, a 175-average bowler, reeled off 10 strikes in a row after a first-frame spare ending with a 289 game and 676 series. Compton was bowling in the Wednesday Business House league.

Gary Willits, in the Elks Tuesday Men's League, put together 11 in a row after a first-frame spare for a 290 game and ended with a nice 709 set. Barb Baumgartner was high for the Elks women with a 674 series, topped with games of 233 and 225.

Other high games at the Elks included Jim Remsh's 277 and a 269 by Doc Basta.

Chris Dittus, bowling in the same Monday 535 League as Bowles, registered games of 234, 246 and 209 for a 671 to lead the Pin & Cue women. Randy Guill also had a 269 game in the Monday 535.

Out at Murph's, Lucas Cyr turned in a big 268 game which was part of a 709 set to lead the men on the eastside. Val Scott's 225 game was the women's high.

Great Falls' Doris Kimmerle and Helena's Marcus Mosness captured the titles at this past weekend's U.S. Open qualifier, held at Helena's Sleeping Giant Lanes.

Kimmerle edged top-seed Tina Davis of Missoula, 190-189, in the final match to take home the first prize of $375, and more importantly, an entry into this year's USBC Queen's Tournament.

She advanced to the title match from the fifth seed, beating Bozeman's Mira Williams, 264-171; Anaconda's Nilda Zacher, 199-157 and Great Falls' Kristen Egan 170-166.

It is Kimmerle first U.S. Open qualifier title.

On the men's side, Mosness, the top seed, held off Great Falls' Bruce Steffani, 222-188 in the final. Steffani was one of three Great Falls bowlers to make the finals.

Steffani advanced into the final with a 226-204 win over Great Falls' Mike Carrette.

Carrette opened the stepladder with a 238-169 victory over Helena's Doug Prewett. Carrette went on to defeat Great Falls' Bruce Hruska, 170-151.

Mosness pocketed the $1,500 first prize and berth in this year's BPAA U.S. Open.

Other Great Falls bowlers making the cut were Willie McGee, in 14th; Bob Orham, in 20th and Pat Terry, in 21st.

Kimmerle and Egan were the only Great Falls women to make the top 16.

Shorts: The Great Falls USBC will hold its annual members meeting Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. Six positions, including a new association president, will be decided.
