2-6-2007 First Ladies Honor team to open women's tournament on SaturdayIn a wonderful break from tradition, the first-ever Ladies Honor Team will open the festivities for the first Great Falls USBC Ladies Championships Saturday at Little's Lanes.Mary Thronson, Grace Gregori, Dale Carlson and Betty Patton — all four active league bowlers — will serve as members of the special team, which will throw out the first ball of the tourney at 3 p.m. The tradition follows in the footsteps of the popular Men's Honor Team, which annually rolls the honorary first ball of the city open tourney. "It was the whole board's idea," said GFUSBC secretary Mike Bowles. "We wanted to recognize the women just like we have the men. "Only problem, we had some problems with the women giving their age." This year's men's team included Les Hackett, Carroll Patton, Henry Baker, Wendell Peck and Rudy Harms — all over 86 years of age. Entries remain open for the first weekend until Thursday. Shift times — and they are a bit confusing — for the four-person team event are on Saturday at 3 and 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Feb. 17. Times on Sunday are 2 p.m. on Feb. 11, and 11 a.m. on Feb. 18. Doubles and singles times this Saturday are 11 and 6 p.m. On Sunday, the lone shift time is 10 a.m. On Feb. 17-18, there are doubles and singles shifts at 2 p.m. each day. The tourney offers $1,000 in added money with three divisions. Entry fee is $18 per person per event. Entries close for the second weekend on Thursday, Feb. 15. Forms are available at all area houses or can be downloaded on line at http//greatfallsbowling.com · n n Laurel's Rock'in Rollers, with Gus Hernandez, Janet Gartner, Eileen and Larry Fox and Duran Stepper, moved into the team lead this past weekend in the Budweiser Handicap Tournament at Lewistown's Snowy Lanes. The fivesome fired a 3,344, edging out Harlem's Master Sports Pinseekers, who have a 3,310. Harlem's Ival Jackson's first-week 1,459 continues to lead the five-game singles' portion. He is followed by Lewistown's Joe Vosen, with a 1,457. The tournament, with an estimated prize fund of $8,000, will run two more weekends. For more information phone Rex Crawford at 535-3473. · n n Billings' Julie Redfern qualified first and went on to capture the fifth stop of the Ladies Traveling Club, held recently at Bozeman's The Bowl. Redfern, who averaged 196.2 in qualifying, defeated Fort Benton's Guyla Streit 217-156 in a lopsided final. Streit, a many time tour stop winner, advanced to the final with a 202-181 victory over Butte's Denise Orizotti. Orizotti, the fifth seed, reached the semifinal with a 200-158 victory over Butte's Kathy Davis and a 188-181 win over Great Falls' Doris Kimmerle. The next stop for the tour will be this Sunday at Butte's Star Lanes. Phone Amie Kraus, 498-7871, for more information about the club. · n n The Elks City Tournament begins two weekends of action Saturday. The tourney is for Elks members only. Phone Rod Hackett, 454-130, for more information. · n n Mike Christensen continues to be one of most consistently high bowlers in town. Christensen's effort included games of 258 and 278. A night later he fired a 258 and 733 in Little's Straight-A-Way. It's been a while since Barb Lankford topped the women's scores. Last week the righthander put together games of 254, 245 and 219 for a nice 718 set in the MixMasters at Little's. Pin & Cue is steadily putting out some high scores. Last week, Don White shook things up with a 747 set, which included an 11-in-a-row 298 game in the Monday 535. Also deserving mention is Joe Skaggs, who tossed a 737 set the same night, with a 279 high game. Nobi Sirucek paced the women with a 225 game and a 599 series.
