Champions crowned in city tournament
Reid Michel, Richard Marten and Joseph Stroup captured the singles titles as the 2008 GFUSBC Open Championships wrapped up Sunday at the Elks and Pin & Cue.
Michel fired a 685 and totaled 766 with handicap for the Division I title. Marten rolled a 661 scratch and 787 in Division 2 and Stroup's 585 scratch and 787 topped Division 3.
Bernie K. Dickman was crowned the scratch champion after posting a big 722 effort.
In the doubles, Mike Judd, with a huge 753 series, and Bob Orham's 668 were too tough for the rest of the Division I field to catch. The pair posted a 1,550.
Al Debortoli and Terry Williams were the Division 2 winners with a 1,453 and Bill Olinier and Jim Powell took the Division 3 crown with a 1,421.
Fred Sadler's 642 series carried Belt Brew Pub to the Division I team title. The fivesome, which also included Tim Neuroth, Gabe Yates, Doug Yates and Gary Bestwina, turned in a 3,392.
First-week leaders, Just Do It, with Barb Baumgartner, Jeanette, Jeri and Chuck Bartels and Mike Baumgartner, held on to win the Division II crown. Chuck Bartels' 698 and Baumgartner's 643 powered the team.
Burt Tschetter's big 710 series carried Westgate Barber Shop to the Division 3 title. Adam Kanning, Tracy Rigor and Connie and Tom Croskrey joined Tschetter to shoot a 3,666.
Dickman was the scratch Division 1 all-event champion and Judd was the handicap winner.
Marten swept both Division 2 all-event titles and Jack Gillespie was the Division 3 scratch champion with Powell taking home the handicap title.
The event drew 59 teams, 93 doubles and 186 singles' entries. All numbers are up from last year's tourney.

After two weeks in the Budweiser Handicap Tourney at Lewistown's Snowy Lanes, Midway Casino has taken over the top spot. The fivesome, which included Becky Olson, Ivan Huseby, Robert McNary, Annette McNary and Cindy Noel, fired a 3,284 this past weekend to overtake first-week leader Lucky Darn Strikers, who dropped to second with a 3,266.
Harlem's Ival Jackson continues to lead the six-game singles with a 1,448. Lewistown's Carol Strander made a run at her but came up a pin short with a 1,447.
Action continues for three more weekends and tourney director Rex Coleman has added a 6:45 Saturday shift for the next two weekends.
Phone Coleman at 535-3473 for more information.

Quickly, in the Junior Masters and Masterettes Tournament, held two weekends ago at Helena's Sleeping Giant Lanes, Cut Bank's Shannon Eaton and Helena's Jacob Brask captured the handicap and scratch titles, respectively.
Eaton defeated Helena's Patrick Fischer in one title match. Brask beat Helena's Josh Forbes in the scratch final.

In last week's top action from around the leagues, a bulky back didn't stop Bruce Steffani from registering one of the top scores rolled at Murph's this season. Steffani uncorked games of 236, 279 and 235 for a huge 750 in the Christian Intramural League to lead the week.
For the women, Dawn Vernon tallied games of 233 and 225 for a 651 set in the Elks' Jack & Jill League.
At Pin & Cue, consistent Nobi Sirucek put up a 254 game in the Sunday Mixed and ended with a nice 624 set to lead the westside women. Rock Rayl strung out 10 in a row for a 290 game on his way to a 667 series in the Wednesday Mixed for men's high.
Downtown at Little's, Rich Crawford enjoyed a good week opening with a 256 game and 721 set in the MixMasters and adding a 266 game and 738 series in Thursday's 725 Classified. Shawna Lane was high for the women with games of 243 and 241 for a 641 set. I wonder what the third game was.
Joe Summers led the men at the Elks with a 684 set, 162 total pins over his average. Summers, bowling in the Friday Night Mixed, had games of 248, 224 and 212.
Also a score of note from Black Eagle, Cindy Caffrey, who carries a 127 average in the Wicked Wednesday League, tossed a nifty 210 game and 527 series, which was 146 total pins over her norm.
