300 game gives Guay singles title

It was an historic weekend for Calgary's Jack Guay and a pair of bowlers from Great Falls and Lolo returned to the winner's circle at the 19th annual Bud Light-Santy Agency Over 40 Singles and 40/90 Doubles, which was held at Little's Lanes.

It took a perfect 300 game by Guay to get past Butte's Mark Hodges in the finals of the Over 40 Singles.

In a pair of high-scoring matches, Guay had to beat Hodges twice to capture the championship.

Hodges, a lanky lefthander, left a ringing 10-pin in the eighth frame and then missed the spare to allow Guay to take a 246-210 victory and force a second game.

Both bowlers reeled off strikes through the seventh frame in the final. Again, Hodges was denied in the eighth frame leaving a 7-pin.

Guay then struck out for his first USBC-sanctioned 300 and 800 series. He has totaled more than 30 perfect games and a number of 800 series, all of them in Canada.

"I was throwing the ball good all day," said Guay. "I averaged over 250 per game."

"This was the second time I was beaten in the final by a 300," said Hodges. "Al Carrette reeled off 23 strikes in a row to beat me in the Miller Masters in the late 80s in Helena."

Guay's victory in the singles added to his 2006 40/90 Doubles title and his victory in the John Willey Memorial last October marked the first time a bowler has held all three titles at once.

"I came down here to win the singles and three in a row," said Guay. "I accomplished my goal."

Guay pocketed $675 for his win. Hodges grabbed second-place money of $470.

Columbia Falls' Ron Vandevanter, who lost to Guay 258-177 in the semifinals, placed third and pocketed $340. Great Falls' Brian Christianson, a 232-197 loser to Vandevanter, took fourth, worth $241.

It took a 206 average over five games to make the cut.

Sunday, former USA Team member Bruce Steffani and Dave Sears paired up to capture the 40/90 Doubles.

Steffani, who won his third doubles title, and Sears, who won the singles in 2005, defeated Helena's John Brodersen and Great Falls' Rich Crawford 249-222 in the final match.

"We bowled consistently good all day," said Steffani, whose two other titles were with Ken Larson.

"I thought we scored better than we bowled," said Sears.

It was the first time Steffani and Sears have paired together.

"We talked about bowling together before we were eligible to bowl in the tourney," said Sears.

Bowling in a Baker alternate-shot format, the pair opened with a spare and then reeled off six straight strikes to take the advantage.

Brodersen and Crawford, who advanced to the final with a 247-223 victory over Great Falls' Tom Brendgord and Duane Zeier, were hindered by a 7-pin leave in the fourth frame and a 10-pin leave in the ninth that halted a four-strike run and ended any chances of catching Steffani and Sears.

Steffani and Sears split $1,100 for the win. Brodersen and Crawford, who also teamed up for the first time in the tourney, halved $750 for second.

In other stepladder results, the Billings' duo of Dave Winslow and Ted Bertrand opened with a 225-147 win over Willie McGee and Billings' Julie Redfern.

Winslow and Bertrand then lost to Brodersen and Crawford, 220-187.

Defending champs Guay and Great Falls' Kristen Egan finished seventh, good for $230.

The doubles drew a full field of 32 teams. The singles' entries were 61, nine more than last year.

Next week, many from this field will move on to Helena to compete in the Rainier Masters at Sleeping Giant Lanes.
