Holiday gifts come in the form of 300's
A trio of Electric City bowlers received some early Christmas gifts as a pair of 300s and an 800 were tossed to highlight a high-scoring week.
Last Wednesday at Little's, Mike Brown and Jody Bastas each put together the perfect 12 to record the 300s followed by Steve Volk on Sunday, who reeled off games of 237, 279 and 290 for a big 805 set in Little's Satellite Mixed.
"It's been a huge week," said Little's Don Jordan. "These lanes were hot."
For Brown, it was his second-career 300. The first came 18 years ago at the now-defunct Skyway Bowl.
"I've thrown a bunch of games in the 290s, but I could never quite get my second 300," said Brown. "Everyone was in the pocket tonight, but I tugged the 11th one just a little, but it carried."
Brown finished the night with a 600 series without a 200 game, going 199, 300 and 198 for a 697.
Rolling a 300 never gets old for Bastas, who collected the eighth of his career.
"It's always exciting to throw a 300," said Bastas, who added games of 236 and 189 for a nice 725. "I pulled the ball in the 11frame, but you always need a little luck to bowl a 300."
Volk's night started well and ended well as he capped his night with the 290 game to vault over the 800 mark.
"It was one of those nights," said Volk. "My teammate, Mike Arps, told me in the last game if I stayed clean in the 10th frame I would have an 800.
"I thought I was going to have a high 700, I didn't know it was going to be an 800."
In Volk's last game, he opened with a spare and then struck off the sheet.
Volk's big series was the fourth 800 set rolled this season, he joins Bernie K. Dickman, Bruce Hruska and Wayne Maurer in the elite club.
Maurer's, an 823, set a new house record at Choteau's Alley Kat Lanes.
Brown's and Bastas' 300s games were the eighth and ninth recorded this season. Reid Michel, Willie McGee, Rich Crawford, Gale Swanson, Leonard McNee and Don Jordan also have tossed 300s this season.
Don Barcus reports that he has bumped up the number of spots for this Saturday's sixth annual Holiday Scratch Classic from 32 to 48 because of heavy interest.
"We have just a few spots left," said Barcus.
The tourney, with an entry fee of $60, is a double-elimination event with a guaranteed first prize of $1,000.
Barcus also said the tourney will pay four more places, all the way down to eighth.

The two 300s and the 800 overshadowed a very high week of scores turned in from around the area's houses.
First at the Elks, Chuck Martin reeled off games of 265, 259 and 233 for a nifty 757 set in the Early Birds.
Martin's effort just beat Darwin Reeve, who tacked together games of 287, 234 and 210 for a 731 in the Wednesday Bull Elks.
For the women, Lauretta Gifford enjoyed a strong week topped by a 695 set in the Thursday Ladies. Gifford's series, which was the high for the week, included games of 259, 234 and 202.
Barb Lankford, still rebounding for his disappointing 299 game, led the women at Little's with a 672 series in the MixMasters, with games of 256 and 235.
Senior bowler Jim Pickering also deserves a mention after a 701 series in the Little's Seniors, coming on games of 268, 219 and 214.
Also, the accurate Blanche Engellent rolled an all-spare 177 game in the Dust Bowler League at Jack's Lanes in Fort Benton.
