Women's champions crowned
If you were leading after the first week of the 2008 Great Falls USBC Ladies Championships, the odds weren't in your favor to hold on to that lead the second week.
There were a flurry of changes at the top of many divisions as the tourney wrapped up Sunday at Elks and Black Eagle Lanes.
Only Della Johnson in singles, Kay Webb and Kathy Hill in doubles and Barb's Aces in the team event were able to maintain their first-week leads to claim championships.
Johnson's 721 in Division 1 singles withstood a second-week onslaught, while Linda Lewis, with a 746, took over the top spot in Division 2 singles. Alyssa Johnson, with a 696, won Division 3.
Webb and Hill's 1,373 was good enough to give the pair the Division 2 doubles title. Dawn Vernon and Heather Vukasin combined for a 1,356 to win the Division 1 event. Pam Newman and Cindy Vossberg were tops in Division 3 with a 1,320.
In the team event, Barb's Aces, with Sharon Feeler, Barb Nelson, Anne Chaisson and Marie Walsh, won the Division 3 title with a 2,528. In Division 1, Turkey Hustlers out of Belt, with Sandy Francom, Kristy Schwantes, Vickie Snyder and Linda Lewis, fired a 2,470 to overtake first-week leader Spare O's. Miss Matched, with Brooke and Tamara Marko, Cheryl Gilbert and Diana Maus, captured the Division 2 title with a 2,536.
Sheila Brady, Lee Ann Gills and Stacey Krautner captured all-event titles in their respective divisions.
Doubles and singles were held at the Elks, while the teams gathered at Black Eagle Lanes.

Helena's Tony Woodward and Billings' Julie Redfern captured the titles Sunday at the U.S. Open Qualifier, held at Helena's Sleeping Giant Lanes.
Woodward, who qualified second after Sunday's match-play portion, defeated John Brodersen, 224-208, in the final match to pocket the top prize of $1,500 and a berth into this year's U.S. Open.
Redfern beat Great Falls' Kristen Dehn in the women's final.
Dehn advanced to the championship match with a 183-171 victory over Missoula's Mary Porter.
Redfern, besides an entry into this year's U.S. Women's Open, took home $200. Dehn collected $150 for second.
Missoula's Jon Conger, who fell to Woodward 174-154, in the third match of the stepladder finished third pocketing $1,000. Bozeman's Joe Seamen was fourth, good for $775, and Butte's Mark Hodges was fifth, $625.

Tidbits: Although snowballs may be a bit hard to find, starting March 15, Elks Lanes will play host to a Spring Snowball No-Tap Tournament, which will run for three weekends. ... Great Falls' Bobbi Olguin and Duane Zeier combined for a 1,783 to win the Jack's Bar and Lanes No-Tap Tournament in Fort Benton. Sue Cline and Randy Kerbs of Fort Benton were second with a 1,775 and Great Falls' Karen and Mike Arps were third with a 1,714. A total of 16 300 games were shots, including four by Karen Arps and three by Zeier. ... In the list of youth scores today in the scoreboard you will find the winners of the recent Great Falls USBC Championships, held recently at Pin & Cue. Scholarship winners were Eric Crawford, boy's scratch; Hillary Vukasin, girls' scratch; Trevor Pepin, boys' handicap; and Heather Hoven, girls' handicap.
There were a pair of 300 near misses last week, but a Murph's bowler stole the show as the season enters its final two months.
Josh Calvert, bowling in the Friday Alibi League on the eastside, turned in consistent efforts of 257, 234 and 258 for a huge 749 series to lead the week.
At Little's, Rich Crawford, who is becoming a threat to roll a perfect game every time out, left a weak 7-pin for a 299 game in the Thursday 725 Classified League. Sunday night, Steve Volk shredded the first 11 in his second game of the Satellite Mixed only to roll a 7-count on his final ball for a 297. Still, Volk finished with a 724 series adding games of 224 and 203.
Mike Christensen was the high for the men at Little's, turning in games of 277 and 265 for a big 744 set in the Short Short Season Trio.
High for the women last week was a 684 turned in by Kristen Dehn. Dehn, bowling in the Wednesday MixMasters at Little's, had games of 256 and 233.
At the Elks, Chuck Bartels earned men's honors with a 706 set in the Friday Mixed. Bartels reeled off games of 247, 234 and 225.
Junior Joleen Martinich tossed a 269 game and 661 series, the highlight for the distaffs.
Consistent Rock Rayl put together games of 245, 258 and 235 for a nice 738 set to lead the men at Pin & Cue. Cristy Snider's 220 game and 599 series earned women's honors.
Finally, Dave Schwertfeger showed off his pinpoint accuracy in last Tuesday night's mixed league at Little's, turning in an all-spare 179 game.
