Tournament snowballs for Elks

Since its inception five years ago, the Elks Snowball Mixed No-Tap Tournament has been looking for a good place to settle.

Rod Hackett's brainchild might have found the right spot.

"We've moved the tournament from December to January and all places in between," said Hackett. "This year we decided to try it at the end of March.

"I think we found the right place."

Saturday the tourney, which features an eight-pin no-tap for women and a nine-pin for the men with a four-person team, drew 26 teams over three shifts.

"That's the biggest day we've ever had," said Hackett. "So much so, we decided to extend the tourney another weekend. We will be running it four weekends through April 5-6."

After the second weekend of action, Bowlin-Dirty, with Barb Baumgartner, Mike Jones, Dawn and Steve Vernon, lead the pack with a 3,412.

Elks Seniors, featuring Della Johnson, Gloria Peuschel, Mearl and Shirley Christianson, are currently second with a 3,348.

Shift times are noon, 2 and 4 p.m. and spots are filling up fast. Teams must have at least one man and one woman and entry fee is $48 per team.

Phone the Elks, 454-1305, to reserve a spot this weekend.

  • A pair of major tournaments, including the start of the USBC Montana Open Championships in Missoula, are on tap this weekend.

Besides the state tourney, the prestigious Ringin' 10 scratch tourney will be held at Butte's Star Lanes.

The tourney, which traditionally offers a first prize of over $2,000 and draws some of the top bowlers from throughout the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountains and Canada, has shift times of 8 a.m., 12:30, 5 and 9:30 p.m. The top 28 advance into Sunday's match-play portion.

Phone 494-3898 for more information about the tourney.

  • The 10-pin, the bane of most of our bowling existences — except if you are a lefthander — reared its ugly head at a pair of inopportune times last week.

First, Dave McGillis, bowling in the Friday Utility League at Little's, strung the first 10, but a ringin' 10 in the 11th hindered his perfect game bid. He ended with a 289 game.

On Sunday night, Mike Carrethers also put together the first 10 only to be confounded by a stubborn 10 pin, also in the 11th. Unfortunately for Carrethers, he missed the spare to end with a 288 game and a 707 series.

Leading the week for the men was Bruce Hruska, who tossed games of 238, 268 and 226 for a 732 series in the Casino League at Little's. A stick behind was Al Pearsall, who tossed a 731 series on games of 277, 228 and 226.

Doris Kimmerle was high for the women with a 684 set, also in the Casino League, highlighted by games of 202, 236 and 246.

At Pin & Cue, Nobi Sirucek's 212 game and 581 series in the Wednesday Mixed earned women's honors. Randy Guill's 235, 213 and 216 and 664 series in the Monday 535 was high for the men.

Jim Remsh and Tracy Rigor turned in highs at the Elks. Remsh, in the Thursday Seniors, reeled off games of 242, 234 and 225 for a 701 set. Rigor, in the Monday Jack & Jill, put together games of 214 and 202 for a 605 for women's honors.

Consistent Rich Fisher again led the way at Murph's. The lefthander registered games of 227, 226 and 266 in the Wednesday Men's Handicap for a 719 series. For the women, Sandy Francom, in the Belt Tuesday League, was high with a 231 game and 551 series.

Here are the rest of last week's honor scores from around the area. Also, included in today's youth scores, above, are results from both the middle and high school roll-offs held last week:
