Groat no goat at Ringin' 10
Chuck Groat overwhelmed Ridg Medford in Sunday's finals to capture his first Ringin' 10 championship at Butte's Star Lanes.
Groat, out of Kerns, Utah, came out of Sunday's match-play as the top seed in the stepladder finals. Groat's victory pocketed the two-time John Willey champion a handsome $2,400.
Medford, from Ontario, Oregon, advanced to the final match with a victory over Andy Kinney of Idaho Falls. Medford, a newcomer to Montana tournament play, won second-place money of $1,800.
Spokane's Matt Vescoteaux took fourth followed by Steve Klompkien, who rounded out the top five stepladder finalists.Idaho bowler Bill Hewlett led Saturday's qualifying.
Great Falls' Mike Christensen and Shawna Lane made the top 48 cut. Lane was one of three women to advance into Sunday's portion.
A total of 214 bowlers, up 48 from the 2007 field, competed in the tourney.
Bowlin' Dirty, made up of Barb Baumgartner, Mike Jones, Dawn and Steve Vernon, maintained its first-place lead after the third weekend of the Elks Snowball No-Tap tourney. The foursome's 3,412 total was good enough to stay ahead of the Elks Seniors, with Della Johnson, Gloria Pueschel, and Mearl and Shirley Christianson, who were at 3,348.
A total of 21 more teams tried its hand at overtaking the top team this past weekend. The tourney has been extended a week and will wrap up Sunday. Shift times are noon, 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
A pair of prestigious youth tourneys are set for this month, starting with this weekend's Glenn Rose Scholarship Tourney at Little's Lanes.
The tourney features both a handicap and scratch format with qualifying on Saturday and match-play and finals on Sunday. Phone Little's at 452-4116 for more information on the tourney.
On April 26-27, some of the best high school bowlers from across the state will be here for the Montana High School Bowling 2008 State Championships, also at Little's.
Three-person teams of both boys and girls will compete for the team titles, with four regular games and four games in the Baker format. A four-game singles tourney will be held simultaneously with the four regular games in the team event.
Entry fee $60 per team with shift times on Saturday at 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The top eight boys' and girls' teams will advance into Sunday's match-play portion, which will be double elimination.
Entry forms are available at all houses and entries close at the start of the last qualifying shift on Saturday.
Phone Tom Brendgord, at 453-2599, for more information.
Guyla Streit continued the trend of close perfect-game calls. Streit, bowling in the Wednesday MixMasters at Little's, put together the first 10 strikes in her final game. In the 11th, she went a little high, leaving a 4-pin and she finished with a nice 289 game and a 662 series.
Streit's set was short of the women's high for the week, which was a 667 by Doris Kimmerle, who had games of 247 and 227 in the Thursday's 725 Classified at Little's.
High for the men last week was Keith Van Setten, who tallied a 717 series in Choteau's Alley Cat Wednesday Men's League. The high sheriff had games of 255, 234 and 228.
In town, leftie Duane Zeier, who reeled off games of 247, 237 and 227 for a 710 in the Satellite Mixed at Little's. paced the men's scores.
At Pin & Cue, consistent Bob Orham turned in a 693 set to lead the men. Orham, in the Monday 535, had games of 209, 247 and 237.
Teresa Solomon was high for the women on the westside with a 584 series, coming on games of 210 and 201.
Steven Vernon fired a 254 game and 674 series for men's high at the Elks. Lauretta Gifford had games of 223 and 209 for the women.
Nathan Beebe's single game of 276 led the way at Murph's.
Here are the rest of last week's honor scores. Just a note, state tourney results from Missoula will be delayed a week.
