Hall of fame honors three bowlers
Marion Olson, Jerry Wagner and Terry Pearsall will be honored in ceremonies Saturday, May 10, at the annual Hall of Fame banquet at the Knights of Columbus.
The Great Falls USBC will also use the ceremonies, which will be held for the second straight year at the Knights of Columbus, as a chance to pass out its season awards.
Cocktails starting at 6:30 p.m. will begin the festivities followed by dinner at 7 with the ceremonies to follow.
Olson will be honored in the Pioneer Division. The wife of longtime bowling proprietor Stand Olson, she worked 40 years in the business in both Helena and Great Falls from 1938 to 1978. Olson has a high game of 279 and a high series of 654, which was good enough to yield her ninth place in the WIBC National Tournament in 1973.Wagner has four city scratch all-events titles to his name plus many singles and team titles in both city and state tournaments. Wagner has a high game of 299 and a career-best series of 821.
Pearsall, whose father and mother were enshrined during ceremonies last year, was the first junior bowler to roll a 300 in Montana. He has many junior city and state titles and currently holds the city's high series with an 857. He has bowled three 800s and four 300s and has two city all-event titles. Last year, he carried the city's high average.
Tickets, which are $12 if purchased by May 3 and $15 after May 3, are available from Shirley Durran, Betty Peterson, Peggy Bowles, Al Decker, Boomer Bruner and Don Jordan at Little's Lanes and Norma Miller at Pin & Cue.
Yours truly will again be honored to play host and emcee the event.
Whitefish's Zack Wootan and Great Falls' Dylan Bigelow captured the scratch and handicap titles, respectively, at this past weekend's Glenn Rose Memorial Scholarship Tournament, held at Little's Lanes.
Wootan, who was the top qualifier, defeated Billings' Cordell Bird in the finals of the scratch event to collect the $500 stipend. Bird's runner-up effort was worth $400. Great Falls' Robbie Schwenck took third ($300), following by Billings' bowlers Chris Dunbar in fourth ($200) and Travis Bird in fifth ($100).
In the handicap final, Bigelow held off Great Falls' Sean Lyle for the crown. The championship match featured a pair of first-year bowlers. Bigelow claimed a $500 stipend. Lyle's share was $400. Great Falls' Mariah Swanson took third, good for a $300 scholarship, followed by Laurel's Trevor Jellison ($200) and Helena's Tyler King ($100).
Joleen Martinich was the high girl finisher in the scratch division and was awarded a $200 stipend.
Eric Crawford turned in a seventh-place finish in other local efforts in the scratch division.
Great Falls' bowlers Sean Davis took sixth and Tristan Almon eighth in the handicap division.
A total of 85 entries, 46 in the scratch and 39 in the handicap, competed in the tourney.
The team Bowlin' Dirty, made up of Barb Baumgartner, Mike Jones, Dawn and Steve Vernon, held on to win the Elks Snowball No-Tap Tournament, which wrapped up three weekends of action Sunday at the downtown center.
Their 3,412 total pocketed first place prize of $400 and beat the Elks Seniors, of Della Johnson, Gloria Pueschel and Mearl and Shirley Christianson. The Elks Senors split the $200 second prize. The Christiansons were part of the third-place team, DoUC, which also included Jackie Undem and Vicky Carroll.
The tourney, which was highlighted by a real 300 game turned in by Bernie K. Dickman, paid out the top 10 places.
Fred Sadler shot the high score of the week, turning a big 289 game into a nifty 717 set, while bowling in the 725 Classified last Thursday at Little's.
Sadler's set was the lone 700 registered last week in the city as bowlers were able to put up some high single games, but couldn't carry that effort through three games.
Barb Lankford was high for the women with a 231 game and 631 series in Little's MixMasters.
Around the city, Heather Vukasin fired games of 219 and 204 on her way to a 622 series to lead the women at Pin & Cue. Randy Guill tacked games of 258 and 226 together for a 674, high for the men.
Downtown at the Elks, Dennis Vandenberg came up four pins short of a 700 after rolling games of 239, 254 and 201 for a 694 in the Tuesday Men. His series was high for the week.
Barb Baumgartner and Jeannette Bartels each tallied 205 games to lead the women.
At Murph's Party Bowl, Rich Fisher topped the list with a 269 game and 657 series.
Other scores of note include a nice 255 game by Robert Smith in the Monday Volunteers at Black Eagle Lanes.
Also in Browning, Aaron Vandenberg tossed a nice 707 series on games of 247, 235 and 225 in the Thursday Mixed at Park Lanes.
