Many bowlers wish for second chances.
Rock Rayl got his second chance in last Monday night's 535 League at Pin & Cue and made the best out of it.
Rayl, after tossing games of 236 and 214, opened his third game leaving a solid 7-pin.
"I stopped carrying in the second game," said Rayl. "I knew I had to do something."
Whatever Rayl did worked.
Rayl reeled off an amazing 23 strikes in a row to finish with a 290 game. Better yet, he strung the next 12 in a row for his second career 300 game.
"I have to say it's pretty exciting," said Rayl. "All of them were good hits except the 22nd one.
"I went big-time Brooklyn by five or six boards and got really lucky."
Rayl's 290 game gave him a 740 set over three games and tagged with his 300, he shot 1,045 for four.
Officially, his perfect game earns Rayl the USBC 300 award. Unofficially, his 804 over the last three will not count as an 800 series.
"It just takes lots of luck to carry strikes," Rayl said. "Last Thursday, I was bowling at the base and I couldn't miss the pocket, but I left three 7-pins and just couldn't strike.
"On Monday night, I just had the right conditions. Every shot on the left lane was flush in the pocket, while every ball on the right lane came up a little light and still carried.
Rayl's 300 puts him in this season's perfect game club — which is growing rapidly — with Guyla Streit, Ryan Moody, Steve Edwards, Bruce Steffani, Mike Bowles, Stephen James, Fred Sadler, Ken Haugen, Reid Michel, Ron Simonsen and Steve Martin
Streit and Moody just rolled their 300 games two weeks ago, while Simonsen and Martin notched theirs in the Over 40 Singles tourney in January.
Butte and Anaconda will be a beehive of kegling activity this weekend as Star Lanes will play host to the Ringin' 10 Tournament, while the 2009 Montana USBC Open Tournament will open eight weekends of fun at Cedar Park Lanes and Copper City Bowl.
The Ringin' 10, with an added-money purse of $1,000 provided by Budweiser, is expected to draw one of the strongest fields ever assembled for the event.
Shift times are 8 a.m., 12:30, 5 and 9:30 p.m. with an entry fee of $120.
Tourney officials are expecting a field of around 200 bowlers.
Phone Star Lanes at 494-3898 for more information or to enter the tourney.
Cedar Park will play host to the team event, with doubles and singles being rolled at Copper City as Anaconda hosts the tournament for the second time in seven years.
The tourney's opening coincides with the annual Hall of Fame banquet, which will be held Friday night starting at 6 at the Anaconda Country Club. The delegate's meeting and election of officers will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday morning at the Elks Lodge, also in Anaconda.
Scores continued to soar last week in league play.
Paul Dehn led the week with a huge 783 series in the 725 Classified at Little's. Dehn's set included games of 279 and 289.
For the women, Guyla Streit bash down the pins with a 760 series in the MixMasters at Little's. Streit, fresh off her second-career 300, rolled games of 256, 279 and 225.
Rayl led the way at Pin & Cue with his 300 and 740, while Cristy Snider was high for the women with a 246 game and 623 series in the Friday Mixed.
At the Elks, Jock Rodger's 682 series, with games of 237 and 235, led the men. Dawn Vernon was high for the women with a 620 series, registering games of 217, 202 and 201.
