John Willey mumblings and other tasty tidbits
by Curt Backa 9-30-2008
This weekend's John Willey
Memorial Tournament at Little's Lanes has drawn 75 entries as of
Monday afternoon.
Last year, with reentries,
the annual event attracted a total of 78, so it looks very much like
this year's meet will go well over that.
Bowlers have always tended
to wait until the last minute to enter, so this could be a very good
year for the tourney.
In some more tourney
mumblings, for those who would like to go down and watch Sunday's
stepladder finals, they usually start between 3:30 and 4. Give
Little's a call, 452-4116, early in the afternoon to get a better
estimate.
Former Ladies Scratch
Classic winner Colleen Insko is entered making three women in the
event so far. Doris Kimmerle and Billings' Julie Redfern are also
entered.
Calgary's T.J. Calara, who
won the 2006 edition of the tourney, beating Chuck Groat in the
finals 193-174, will return after a two-year absence.

Here's some news out Montana USBC Jamboree, held two weekends
ago in beautiful Andaconda.
Anaconda's Nilda Zacher and
Rick Perry will represent the state in the next Queen's and Masters,
respectively. Their entry into the tourney will be paid by the state
association.
No word out of Browning
whether Park Lanes has a buyer yet, but a rumor is floating the
lanes in Roundup might reopen.
In its heyday, the Roundup
facility, C Lanes, served up some of the best pie around. The
parents of Judge Richard Cebull, the long time federal magistrate
here in Great Falls and now the chief judge of Montana, ran the
lanes for years and Mrs. Cebull turned out some of the best pies in
the land. Yum.
The new Bigfork center will
be sanctioned this fall with leagues starting. The lanes will play
host to the State Mixed in 2009.
Thanks to state president
Laurel Walker for the information.
On tap each weekend in
October will be the Elks Fall Fiasco No-tap Tournament.
The tourney will consist of
four-person teams. Women must get nine pins on the first ball for a
strike, while the men just have to get eight. At least one woman
must be on all teams.
This is opposite of the
winter Snow Ball event held at the lanes.
Phone the Elks at 454-1305
to reserve a spot.
The magical 800 series had
to be on the mind of Brian Lee last week in Little's MixMasters.
Lee, who has been on a
torrid streak as of late, reeled of games of 278, 279 and 226 for
lofty 783 series, the high mark of the early season so far.
Lee's set was high for the
men, while Doris Kimmerle led the women, posting a nice 257 game and
683 series, also in the MixMasters.
At the Elks, Bill Brown set
the pace for the men with a 689 series, with games of 245 and 234,
in the Tuesday Men.
For the women, Roxie Arps'
245 game and 626 series edged out Holly Vukasin, who turned her
first-ever 600 series with a 625, sparked by a 224 game.
Linda Michel registered the
top game for the women last week with a hefty 278 and was high for
the women at Pin & Cue with a 605 series.
Steady Darrin Davenport led
the men with a 693 series, on games of 244 and 247.
