The women, indeed, took over last week. No more so than Joleen Martinich. Martinich, bowling in the Great Falls USBC City Bowling Championships at Little's Lanes, opened with games of 269, 244 and 230 for a 743 series in the team event. The 743 was high series of the week for both the men and women. Ironically, her series wasn't enough to propel her team to the top of the standings. Martinich finished out the tourney with a 591 in the doubles and a 510 in the singles for an 1,844 scratch total, good enough to grab the all-events title. Martinich, who won the 2008 Classic 50s Ladies Classic in her first venture into the adult scratch ranks, can continue to use her youth eligibility until she's 21 to earn scholarship money on the junior level as she pursues a college education. Any money she earns in adult tournaments is deferred to her scholarship fund. In addition to Martinich's superlatives, the ladies completed the first weekend of the GFUSBC Ladies Championships at Black Eagle and Elks Lanes. Teresa Solomon, with a 683; Amanda Solomon, Teresa's daughter, with a 701; and 80-year-old Mary Ellen VanHoozen took the leads in the three singles' divisions. Here are the top three leaders in each event: Team (Black Eagle) Division 1— 1. Just Do It (Barb Baumgartner, Sharon Yeager, Jeanette Bartels, Jeri Bartels) 2,444. 2. Bowl For Fun, 2,393. 3. Barb's Aces, 2,375. Division 2— 1. Saltz & Peppers (Charlene Kommers, Kay Webb, Pat Dross, Louise Saltz), 2,392. 2. DIVAS, 2,287. 3. Dutton State Bank, 2,243. Division 3— 1. Morning Doves (Emma Pengilly, Barb Bessler, Amanda Counts, Donna Bossard), 2,393. 2. GFUSBC Honor Team, 2,370. Doubles (Little's Lanes) Division 1— 1. Jeannette-Jeri Bartels, 1,339. 2. Dawn Vernon-Sheila Brady, 1,302. 3. Sharon Yeager-Barb Baumgartner, 1,299. Division 2— 1. Diane Richards-Vivian Harrington, 1,272. 2. Charlene Kommers-Louise Saltz, 1,266. 3. Nancy Brus-Veeronia Yakos, 1,261. Division 3— 1. Pauline Phillips-Barb Dahlman, 1,240. 2. Kay Webb-Pat Dross, 1,177. Singles (Little's Lanes) Division 1— 1. Teresa Solomon, 683. 2. Karen Kernaghan, 652. 3. Jeanette Bartels, 648. Division 2— 1. Amanda Solomon, 701. 2. Charlene Kommers, 691. 3. Mallory Curry, 690. Division 3— 1. Mary Ellen VanHoozen, 685. 2. Pat Dross, 626. 3. Kay Webb, 622. All Events Division 1— Jeanette Bartels, 1,955. Division 2— Sharon Yeager, 1,989. Division 3— Pat Dross, 1,823. The tournament wraps up this weekend. Squad times for both the team event and doubles and singles are 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for both Saturday and Sunday. According to tournament director Shirley Durran, Sunday's doubles and singles shift at 2 p.m. is full and the Saturday team squad at 2 p.m. as only one slot left. Entry forms are available at all lanes, and entries close at midnight Thursday. Phone Durran at 781-2843 for more information. There were no changes — even with the onslaught of the Belt contingent —to the leaders in the Budweiser Handicap Tournament in Lewistown. The Snow Monsters, out of Roy, with Kyle and Karen Moseman, Kauri Stulc, Darcy Sturm and James Shirey, lead the team event with a 3,430. Zanto Construction is still in second with a 3,342. Ival Jackson's 1,517 total continues to top the six-game singles' standings. Bobby Herring, out of Billings, is in second with a 1,442. This weekend will be the last in the $2,000-added money event. A few openings remain for Saturday's 7 p.m shift. Phone Rex Coleman at 535-3473 to reserve a spot. Martinich's 743 blew away both the high men's and women's score a week ago, but there were still some good efforts turned in. Bruce Hruska led the men at Little's with a nice 738 set in the 725 Classified. Hruska's set included games of 266, 234 and 238. Kristen Dehn's 694, with a 257 game, in the MixMasters was high for the women downtown. At the Elks, Rick Cummings broke through for his first 700 of the season with a 718 in the Monday Ag League. Cummings' set included consistent games of 247, 236 and 235. Heather Helmbrecht was high for the women with a 629 series, with a pair of 213 games, in the Friday Mixed. At the base, Doc Shampo led the way with a 707 set, on games of 247 and 236, in the Christian Intramurals. Here are the rest of last week's honor scores from around the area, including final results from the GFUSBC Youth City Tournament. Also, computer deficiences in Cut Bank did not allow any scores from Glacier Lanes to be transmitted.
