Trio dominates women's city tournament

It was quite a city tournament for Jeanette Bartels, Jeri Bartels and Sharon Yaeger.

The trio combined to win three titles and added a third place as the Great Falls USBC Ladies Championships concluded Sunday at Black Eagle and Elks Lanes.

First, the threesome along with Barb Baumgartner fired a 2,444 to win the Division I team event.

The two Bartels then finished third in doubles, and Jeanette, with a 1,955, and Yaeger, with a 1,989, captured the handicap all-events titles in Division 1 and 2, respectively.

In other highlights, Dar Gifford was a double winner. She and partner Cheryl Gilbert won the Division 2 doubles, and Gifford won the Division 3 handicap all events title.

You might remember Gifford and Gilbert from a few years ago, when they saved a man's life while bowling league at Murph's.

Kristen Dehn won the scratch all-events with a 1,793 total.

Here are the final but unofficial results from the tourney:

  • Team event (Black Eagle Lanes)

Division 1— 1. Just Do It (Barb Baumgartner, Sharon Yaeger, Jeannette Bartels, Jeri Bartels), 2,444. 2. Bowl For Fun, 2,393. 3. Barb's Aces, 2,375.

Division 3— 1. Morning Doves (Emma Pengilly, Barb Bessler, Amanda Counts, Donna Bossard), 2,393.

    Doubles (Elks Lanes)

    Division 2— 1. Dar Gifford-Cheryl Gilbert, 1,316. 2. Alyssa Johnson-Karolee Pearson, 1,284. 3. (tie) Lita Howes-Gena Clark, 1,272; Diane Richards-Vivian Harrington, 1,272.

    Singles (Elks Lanes)

    All Events

Handicap Division 1— Jeanette Bartels, 1955. Division 2— Sharon Yaeger, 1989. Division 3— Dar Gifford, 1918.

    Scratch— 1. Kristen Dehn, 1,793.

  • Bowling in the second to final shift Sunday, Team Chinook turned in a 3,499 to capture the team title at the Budweiser Handicap at Lewistown's Snowy Lanes.

With Randy and Crystal Huckabee, Tom Murray, Jeff Finley and Mickey Cross, Team Chinook overtook previous leader, Snow Monsters of Roy, who had led with a 3,430.

Team Chinook collected $1,000 for the victory. Snow Monsters pocketed $720.

Tournament fixture Ival Jackson of Harlem held on to win the singles. Jackson's six-game total of 1,517 earned the kegler the $504 first-place check.

Circle's Harley Becker took second with a 1,443 and the $355 second prize.

Top local team in the tourney was Belt's Power Tech, who turned in a 3,277, good for 11th.

Great Fall's Jason Beam was the top local finisher in the singles, shooting a 1,442, which tied for third.

The tournament ran five weekends and paid out over $8,000 in prize money.

Inclement weather the first weekend played havoc with the popular tourney. Tourney director Rex Coleman said that teams were down by about 10 from last year with 107, while the singles drew 20 more entries than in 2009 with 266.

  • If someone had told me that Bob Orham had never shot a 300 game, I would have probably told them they were lying.

Unfortunately, Orham still has that distinction as a wobbly 4-pin denied the talented veteran a perfect game and he had to settle for a 299 in last Wednesday's MixMasters at Little's Lanes.

And in the Monday Classic League, also at Little's, Amy Clure left a 3-pin in the 11th frame after 10 straight strikes to finish with a 289 game, which was 131 pins over her average.

Leading the week was Ron Corkin, who put together games of 241, 248 and 278 for a hefty 767 effort in the 725 Classified at Little's.

Guyla Streit returned to the 700 club with a 714 in the MixMasters. Streit's games were 278, 200 and 236.

  • Solid three-game sets were hard to come by last week at the Elks.

Mike Bowles turned out to be high last week with a 651 in the Tuesday Men. Bowles' games were 225, 215 and 211.

For the women, Connie Dickman's 623 in the Monday Jack and Jill was high. Dickman's set included games of 234 and 209.
