You have to hand it to Elks Lanes manager Rod Hackett and the lodge's board of directors. Hackett and the board put on a big push to increase the entries in this year's Elks State Tournament. Hackett offered nonmembers a chance to bowl in one of the state events free, if they joined the Elks. "We got about 12 new members," said Hackett. "Plus, we raised the interest in our local members to bowl in the event." Hackett's effort worked two-fold — he increased the membership in the Elks and he kept once-florishing tournament alive. "For many years, the Elks State Tournament had as many bowlers in it as the state tournament," said Hackett. "When the fraternal organizations around the state started dying out, the tourney started to die. "We wanted to bring it back." Already the tournament has drawn 22 teams, 34 doubles and 68 singles entries the first weekend, for both men and women, and Hackett expects a big turnout again this weekend. "We have a few spots left," said Hackett. The tournament could pay dividends for a pair of new members. Michael Hagen and DC Dobson fired a 1,338 to lead the men's doubles, and Hagen's 773 in the singles stands second. The Elks is still taking entries for this weekend, phone 454-1305. Here are the unofficial results after the first week: Singles Men— 1. Dennis Cooper, Deer Lodge, 777. 2. Michael Hagen, GF, 773. 3. Mark Wigen, Shelby, 715. Women— 1. Sharon Yaeger, GF, 633. 2. Speaking of state tournaments, entries are filling up fast for the $4,000-added money Montana USBC Association Open Championship, which will be held at Fireside Lanes, team event, and Sunset Bowl, doubles and singles. The tournament begins April 17 and runs through May 23. Phone reservations can be made or e-mail reservations requests can be sent to mgr2010open@bresnan.net. Tournament director Greg McCannel will do his best to fill your request and will send you back a tournament update on which weekends are available. There are a couple of quirks on the schedule, so be sure and check the squad times listed on the entry form. Phone entries close at 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 9. Entry fees are $20 per event with additional fees for all-events, scratch team, scratch all-events, scratch doubles, scratch singles and double team singles. Ken Curry had a shot at the elusive 800 series last week, but setted for a nice 788 set, which included games of 267, 255 and 266 while bowling in the Thursday Night Mixed at Little's. Connie Dickman was high for the women. Dickman, bowling in the Monday Jack & Jill League the Elks, reeled off games of 255, 222 and 202 for a 679. Pat Terry deserves a mention after stringing out the first 11, but left a 2-8 spare in the 12th to finish with a 298 game. High for the women at Little's was Doris Kimmerle, who had 670, with games of 223, 215 and 232, in the Wednesday MixMasters. The aforementioned Hackett was high for the men at the Elks with a 719, on games of 246, 238 and 235, in the Jack & Jill. Kudos go out to senior Dale Sirucek, who had a nice 701 set in the Little's Seniors. Sirucek's set included games of 243 and 248.
