State's bowlers dent national tourney standings
by Curt Backa
3-9-2010
In the latest standings from the 2010 USBC Open Championships, Montana bowlers are well represented.
In the Regular Division doubles, Havre's Shawn Mariani and Ryan Mapes were currently in fifth place with a 1,301 pinfall.
The Scobey team entry, Whitlow Furnace, is holding down the second spot in the Classified Division with a 2,602. Minnow's Marine, out of Havre, is a few notches behind in fifth, with a 2,558.
Malta's Charles Zanto and Havre's Barry Zanto are in 10th place in the Classified doubles with a 1,090 pinfall.
Gildford's Bret Preeshel was holding down the 10th spot in the Classified all events with a 1,655, and Scobey's Ron Roberts had held that spot with a 1,635.
The tournament, which is being held in Reno's National Bowling Stadium, opened Feb. 20 and runs through July 4.
With shifts running almost 24 hours every day, many of these standings may be incorrect. Go to bowl.com for up-to-date results from the tourney.
The Montana USBC has announced its inductees into the Montana State Bowling Hall of Fame.
Billings' sportswriter Bill Bighaus, Bozeman's Don Smith and Billings' Ruth Sprankel will be inducted in ceremonies on Saturday, April 24, at the Billings' Hilton Garden Inn.
Yours truly has also been included in the list and will be humbled to enter the hall also.
Bighaus, a longtime writer for the Gazette, will be recognized for his coverage of the 2002 national tournament held in Billings. His work revolutionized media coverage of the tournament. He also pens features and stories on many Montana bowlers in and around Billings.
Smith and Sprankel will be recognized for their hard work with the state's ABC and WIBC boards as well as the current USBC setup.
Tickets for the event will be available at the door. Cocktails are at 6 p.m. with dinner and ceremonies to follow.
Senior Ron Miller led the way last week.
Miller, bowling in the Elks Seniors, turned in games of 259, 244 and 233 for a 736. The series was 184 total pins over his average.
Kristen Dehn again was high for the women with a 711 set. Dehn, who currently holds the top average in the city with a 216, had games of 238 and 278 in the MixMasters at Littles.
Ron Corkin was high for the men at Little's with a 725 set in the 725 Classified. Corkin reeled off games of 233, 235 and 257.
Also worth mentioning was a 723 series turned in by Dave Keil. Keil, bowling in the Bull Elks, had games of 245, 226 and 262.
Leading the women at the Elks was Barb Baumgartner, who tossed a 651 series in the Friday Mixed. Baumgartner's set included games of 236 and 220.
Also, Willie McGee registered games of 235, 233, 234 and 202 for a 702 and a 1,086 five-game set in the Straight-A-Way PBA Experience League at Little's.
